Wilsonville, OR - Hazel Diane Barendse, known lovingly as Hazel, passed away on February 7, 2026, in Wilsonville, Oregon, at the age of 80. She was born on August 22, 1945, in Astoria, Oregon, to Walter and Verna Palmrose, and she lived a life marked by faith, devotion, and quiet strength. Hazel was a Christian woman whose life reflected the love of Jesus in the way she cared for others, served her family, and met each day with grace.
Hazel graduated from Knappa High School and carried the values of hard work and perseverance throughout her life. She worked for many years as a Clockroom Attendant at Wauna Mill and also served the community through her involvement with United Way, where she was a chair for many years. She also worked at D&D Market, where her kindness and steady presence were appreciated by those around her. In every place she served, Hazel was known as dependable, thoughtful, and sincere.
Family was the center of Hazel's life, and she treasured each member of her family deeply. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Del Barendse, as well as her parents, Walter and Verna Palmrose, and her brother, Wally Palmrose. She is survived by her sister, Florence Peugh, her brother, Bobbie Palmrose, her daughters, Kim Fanno, Sara Lewis, and her son, Mike Allen. Hazel was also a devoted grandmother to seven grandchildren, and they were the great joy of her heart. She loved them fiercely and completely, and there was nothing she would not do for them.
Those who knew Hazel knew love. She was the most unselfish person many had ever met, always putting others before herself and always giving with a willing heart. Her life was a beautiful example of kindness, generosity, and compassion. She had a gentle spirit and a caring nature that made others feel seen, valued, and loved. Hazel did not seek attention or praise, but she quietly blessed the lives of those around her in countless ways.
Hazel's faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. She loved the Lord with all her heart, and her faith was not something she only spoke about, but something she lived each day. She showed others what kindness, grace, and forgiveness look like in action. Even in difficult times, her trust in Jesus never wavered. Her life was a testimony to the power of a faithful heart and the peace that comes from walking with the Lord.
Hazel will be remembered as selfless, faith-filled, and loving. She leaves behind a legacy of devotion to God, love for her family, and service to others. Her life touched many, and her memory will continue to bring comfort to those who were blessed to know her. Though she is no longer with us, her example remains, and the love she gave will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
A memorial service of Hazel's life will be held in Knappa, Oregon at Knappa Assembly of God Church on May 2, 2026 at 1:00pm. All who knew Hazel are respectfully invited to attend and share their memories.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to a charity or organization that was meaningful to Hazel, such as United Way, Knappa High School, or her local church where her service is located. This would honor her legacy of service and faith, reflecting the values she cherished throughout her life.
