“Members of the Cedar Lake congregation, including J. H. Elson, Daniel Phillips, & others, began holding periodic meetings in the northern part of the Cedar Lake territory in the early 1900s. Many of those meetings were held in homes &, occasionally, at the Neidig School which was located on C.R. 19, about one mile south of the present church building. Those who attended the services became interested in forming their own group.
Working with Elder John Ulrey & the District Mission Board, a Sunday school organization was developed. The first meeting was held on the first Sunday of January in 1912 in the old Putt school house, located at C.R. 19 & C.R. 4.
Elder Ulrey came once a month to preach. Later that year he moved to Auburn &, in 1913, the Mission Board agreed to send preachers to the little group on a regular basis.
Originally called Cedar Lake North, the group steadily increased membership. Successful negotiations were completed with a Mennonite group to hold meetings in their church building. Cooperative services with the Mennonites were held for a short time, but the Mennonite group began to die out. In 1917, the Brethren purchased the building. A remodeling project, including the addition of a basement, was completed in 1918. The question of dividing the Cedar Lake territory was officially raised in 1921. Approval by the Cedar Lake congregation was given on May 19th. The name ‘Pleasant Chapel’ was adopted on May 22nd.” ~Planting the Faith in a New Land – Church of the Brethren in Indiana
