St. Joseph was a humble carpenter of Nazareth, chosen by God for a unique and sacred mission: to be the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the earthly foster father of Jesus. Descended from the line of King David, Joseph was a just and faithful man. When he discovered that Mary was expecting a child, he initially planned to divorce her quietly to spare her shame, but an angel appeared to him in a dream and revealed that the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. In trust and obedience, Joseph took Mary into his home and embraced the vocation God had given him.
Joseph protected and provided for the Holy Family with quiet strength. He led them to Bethlehem for the census, where Jesus was born, and later fled with Mary and the infant Jesus into Egypt to escape King Herod’s violence. After Herod’s death, Joseph returned his family to Nazareth, where he worked as a carpenter and raised Jesus in the traditions of the Jewish faith. Though Scripture records no spoken words of Joseph, his actions reveal deep faith, courage, and unwavering trust in God’s guidance.
Throughout the centuries, the Church has honored St. Joseph as the patron of the universal Church, fathers, workers, and a happy death. His life reminds the faithful that holiness is often found in ordinary duties carried out with extraordinary love. On his feast day, March 19, the Church celebrates his faithful guardianship of Jesus and Mary and his model of quiet, steadfast devotion.
