St. Joseph was a humble carpenter of Nazareth, chosen by God for a unique and sacred mission: to be the husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the earthly foster father of Jesus. Descended from the line of King David, Joseph was a just and faithful man. When he discovered that Mary was expecting a child, he initially planned to divorce her quietly to spare her shame, but an angel appeared to him in a dream and revealed that the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. In trust and obedience, Joseph took Mary into his home and embraced the vocation God had given him.

Joseph protected and provided for the Holy Family with quiet strength. He led them to Bethlehem for the census, where Jesus was born, and later fled with Mary and the infant Jesus into Egypt to escape King Herod’s violence. After Herod’s death, Joseph returned his family to Nazareth, where he worked as a carpenter and raised Jesus in the traditions of the Jewish faith. Though Scripture records no spoken words of Joseph, his actions reveal deep faith, courage, and unwavering trust in God’s guidance.

Throughout the centuries, the Church has honored St. Joseph as the patron of the universal Church, fathers, workers, and a happy death. His life reminds the faithful that holiness is often found in ordinary duties carried out with extraordinary love. On his feast day, March 19, the Church celebrates his faithful guardianship of Jesus and Mary and his model of quiet, steadfast devotion.

St. Cyril of Jerusalem was born around the year 313 in or near Jerusalem and was ordained a priest before becoming bishop of the holy city around 350. He lived during a time of intense theological conflict within the Church, especially over the nature of Christ and the A***n controversy. As bishop, Cyril faithfully defended the true teaching of the divinity of Christ, even when it brought him into conflict with powerful political and ecclesiastical leaders. Because of these disputes, he was exiled from Jerusalem three separate times, enduring years of hardship for the sake of the faith.

Cyril is best remembered for his Catechetical Lectures, a series of instructions given to those preparing for baptism and to the newly baptized. In these teachings, he carefully explained the Creed, the sacraments, and the meaning of Christian worship, helping believers understand the mysteries they celebrated. His writings provide some of the earliest and clearest descriptions of the Church’s liturgy and sacramental life in the fourth century.

Despite controversy and suffering, Cyril remained a devoted shepherd to his people. He was eventually restored to his see and participated in the Council of Constantinople in 381, which reaffirmed the Church’s teaching on the Trinity. He died in 386 and was later declared a Doctor of the Church for his important contributions to Christian teaching. On his feast day, March 18, the Church honors his steadfast defense of the faith and his dedication to forming believers in truth and holiness.

Inspiring Fun Fact:

Irish-American Catholic athlete James Brendan Connolly made history in 1896 as the first Olympic champion of the modern era, winning the triple jump at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens. Born in Boston to Irish immigrant parents, Connolly overcame humble beginnings, worked his way into Harvard, and left school to pursue his dream of competing on the world stage. His leap of over 44 feet not only earned him victory, but secured his place in history as the first Olympic gold medalist in more than 1,500 years.

Connolly’s story is one of courage, determination, and Irish pride — a reminder that greatness often comes from those willing to take bold risks in pursuit of something bigger than themselves. 🇮🇪🏅

St. Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late fourth century. As a teenager, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland, where he was enslaved and forced to work as a shepherd. During these lonely years, Patrick turned deeply to prayer, growing in faith and trust in God. After six years in captivity, he escaped and returned home to his family, but his heart remained drawn to the people of Ireland.

After studying for the priesthood and later being ordained a bishop, Patrick felt called to return to Ireland as a missionary. With courage and perseverance, he preached the Gospel throughout the land, converting many and establishing churches and Christian communities. Tradition holds that he used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the mystery of the Holy Trinity. Despite facing opposition and hardship, Patrick remained steadfast in his mission, relying on prayer and the grace of God.

St. Patrick is credited with playing a central role in bringing Christianity to Ireland, and his legacy shaped the spiritual life of the nation for centuries. He died on March 17, likely in the fifth century, and was later honored as Ireland’s patron saint. On his feast day, the Church remembers his faith, missionary zeal, and unwavering trust in God’s providence.

Pray the powerful Lorica of St. Patrick (The Breastplate Prayer):

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation.

I arise today
Through the strength of Christ's birth and His baptism,
Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,
Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,
Through the strength of His descent for the judgment of doom.

I arise today
Through the strength of the love of cherubim,
In obedience of angels,
In service of archangels,
In the hope of resurrection to meet with reward,
In the prayers of patriarchs,
In preachings of the apostles,
In faiths of confessors,
In innocence of virgins,
In deeds of righteous men.

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God's strength to pilot me;
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
From snares of the devil,
From temptations of vices,
From every one who desires me ill,
Afar and anear,
Alone or in a mulitude.

I summon today all these powers between me and evil,
Against every cruel merciless power that opposes my body and soul,
Against incantations of false prophets,
Against black laws of pagandom,
Against false laws of heretics,
Against craft of idolatry,
Against spells of women and smiths and wizards,
Against every knowledge that corrupts man's body and soul.
Christ shield me today
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding,
So that reward may come to me in abundance.

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,
Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,
Christ in the eye that sees me,
Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through a belief in the Threeness,
Through a confession of the Oneness
Of the Creator of creation
