UCC Ashland

UCC Ashland God is still speaking! No matter who, no matter what, no matter where you are on life’s journey, you are invited and welcome.

We are a progressive Protestant Christian community of faith and service. Our congregation is a place where our members seek to know God in the spirit of Jesus Christ and to gain strength and support for our spiritual journeys and ministries. Central to our faith is our belief that Christ calls us to participate in God’s reign of justice, peace, and compassion on earth. We seek to live out an incl

usive vision in which all may participate in every aspect of the church’s life, its worship, ministries, governance, and leadership. We do not discriminate on the basis of age, ability, race, gender, or sexual orientation. As a congregation, we participate in several interfaith programs: the Ashland Food Bank, Meals-on-Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, and the Interfaith Care Community of Ashland. In witness to our historical concern for justice, we declared our church open and affirming of gay, le***an, bisexual, and transgendered persons in 1991. Some of our weekly events:

Sunday Service: 9am online, 10:30am In Person

TaizÉ Meditation: Wednesdays, 7:30-8:15 pm: Join us for 45 minutes of meditative music, singing and worship. (September-May)

***Community Standards***

TOMMOROW! JOIN US ON JUNETEENTH AT UCC

FROM GENEROSITY TO JUSTICE

You are invited to spend Juneteenth (June 19th from 6-7:30pm) at UCC Ashland learning from Mike Green, founder of Common Ground Conversations and host of JPR’s Jefferson Exchange. Mike understands racial dynamics in the Rogue Valley as well as anyone, and will facilitate an interactive (and potentially messy) conversation on Chapter 3: The Awareness of Ignorance, From Generosity to Justice. Mike is a master educator, so we’ll each walk away with new understanding in our current areas of ignorance.

HONORING OPAL LEE
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth the eleventh federal holiday. Lee as an honored guest at the ceremony. Now, the day commemorating when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation is considered alongside other traditions – a major acknowledgment of the horrors of slavery. For her advocacy work, Lee was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2022 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024.
Meanwhile, other parts of Lee’s work were in full bloom – literally. In 2019, Lee’s nonprofit organization started Opal's Farm, which now spreads across five acres of urban farm along the Trinity River in Fort Worth's United Riverside neighborhood. In 2022, the farm produced over 5 tons of food, providing fresh produce to local food banks and offering reduced-price vegetables to SNAP customers at farmers markets across the county.
At 98, Lee continues to lead annual Juneteenth walks and is still actively organizing in her community. In 2024, she moved into a new home built on the same lot where her family's house was burned down 85 years earlier. The National Juneteenth Museum, of which she’s a member of the executive board, is scheduled to open in Fort Worth in 2026.
Lee's organizing work made it possible for all of us to commemorate this holiday and, honor her enduring spirit. She shows how persistence makes possibility, and why it’s important to remember as a path forward.
