Meet our New Projected Pastor – Nilse Furtado-Gilliam! As announced at the close of our worship service on April 12, Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church has been notified by the Bishop that we are projected to receive a new pastor effective July 5, while Pastor Michael is projected to be new Lead Pastor at Mt. Pisgah UMC in Midlothian.
Our projected new pastor is Nilse Furtado-Gilliam, currently Associate Pastor at Clarendon UMC in Arlington, VA. She started there in March 2019 as Director of Discipleship Development, and has been Associate Pastor since July 2021.
She is an engaging communicator and strategic leader, with experience across the spectrum of Christian education, course design, developing and directing programs for children and youth, leading teams, web design and communications. In addition to her pastoral duties, she currently co-chairs the Virginia Annual Conference’s Board of Discipleship, and is Vice President of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy’s Board of Directors and the Virginia United Methodist Church’s Latino Caucus.
Rev. Nilse is a native of Brazil, where her father is a Methodist Bishop. In fact, she is one of 11 pastors in her family! She received her bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Rust College (graduating Summa Cum Laude), a master’s in journalism from the University of Memphis, and completed her Master of Divinity degree in May 2021 at Asbury Theological Seminary.
She and her husband, Sean, have two children: a son, Elijah, who will be an incoming freshman at Randolph-Macon College; and a daughter, Naya, who is 11 and will be entering the sixth grade.
