It's Saturday. The tomb is still shut.

You're one of the disciples who witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus. You saw Joseph of Arimathea take the body of Jesus and lay it in the tomb.

What mixture of emotions must you be feeling today?

The joy of the triumphal entry into Jerusalem has turned into bewilderment and despair.

You remember all the times you spent with Jesus.

Partying with Him at the wedding at Cana of Galilee and witnessing His first miracle.

Helping feed the five thousand and seeing Jesus walk on the water.

You remember all the lessons from His teachings and can't fathom how things could have turned out this way.

What went wrong?

Even though you are surrounded by the other disciples, you feel so alone in your thoughts and grief.

The weight of it all is overwhelming and crushing. You feel as if you can hardly breathe.

We know that Sunday is coming, but the disciples didn't.

I don't like the "in-between" time. The uncertainty is awful. I mourn the loss of "what was" and don't have a glimmer of "what will be."

I want you to know you are not alone if you are in that place. The Holy Spirit was with the disciples, and He is with you now.

Believe it or not, this is by design. God, in His wisdom, puts us in "the in-between."

He's doing an unseen work inside us when we are in "the in-between." He's forging a deeper trust and faith.

Diamonds are created under extreme heat and pressure.

When we do not know the end of the story, we must trust in the One who does.

If you are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, don't stop. Keep going. There's an end to the valley and life on the other side. Let His rod and staff guide and protect you.

God, in His mercy, limited the in-between for the disciples to only three days. Your in-between may be longer.

You may be experiencing your Saturday, but have hope because Sunday IS coming!

We had a lightning storm last night. It's one of the things I love about living in Tennessee.

But, our two Cocker Spaniel dogs, who were asleep on the bed with us, jumped off the bed and ran around anxiously whining. They HATE lightning and thunder. I gathered them back up on the bed and held them close, and they calmed right down. The thunder didn't stop, but in my arms, they felt safe and weren't anxious any longer.

As I was holding them, I realized it was a picture of many of us when the storms of life hit. We're resting peacefully with our Lord, and WHAM! The storm hits.

What do we do?

If I'm honest, sometimes I run around anxiously whining (In my own way, of course), separating myself from the very One that brings me comfort and peace.

It's not until He leaves the 99 and gathers me back into His arms that I regain my composure and peace.

But it need not be that way.

Matthew 7:24-25 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock."

The storms WILL come. When they do, let us run TO the Author of our Peace.

Shalom

Food for thought:
When Jesus says, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"
What's he talking about?

The light of the world is here! Emmanuel, God with us, has arrived! The darkness CAN be defeated. We are no longer separated from God since His one and only Son has pierced the darkness and entered into our realm as a baby.

His arrival needed to comply with His Majesty, but angels heralded him to lowly shepherds. He did not arrive with power and might that should have accompanied the One who declared, "Let there be light!"

The one who separated the light from the darkness and the seas from dry land could have come and destroyed the Roman occupation of the Holy Land. That WAS what was expected.

The King who would liberate Israel would establish His kingdom in Jerusalem forever. Isn't that what the Scriptures foretold? He must be coming in power and might to establish His throne. How could it be any other way?

But God had different plans. He came in the most vulnerable, helpless, weak way to identify with us.

We often feel vulnerable, helpless, and weak, and He wants us to know He's been there and done that.

We are no longer alone in our helpless estate. We can cry out to the God who identifies with us. He became one of us!

Yes, He is fully God, but Jesus is also fully human. He knows what hunger, cold, loneliness, temptation, and betrayal mean.

This Christmas, I pray that the Humble God, lying in a manger, will remind you of His eternal love for you. You would know, without a doubt, that He is for you.

Christmas can be a difficult time for some folks. Please remember those who are alone this season. Remember those spending their first Christmas without the one they most wanted to spend Christmas with.

Remember as you open your gifts and celebrate together, that the reason we give gifts is because of the incomparable gift of eternal life offered for you and for me, was given this day in the form of a baby, asleep in a manger, in a dirty stable in Bethlehem.

I love you very much and wish each of you the merriest of Christmases.

Shalom!
