The light of the world is here! Emmanuel, God with us, has arrived! The darkness CAN be defeated. We are no longer separated from God since His one and only Son has pierced the darkness and entered into our realm as a baby.
His arrival needed to comply with His Majesty, but angels heralded him to lowly shepherds. He did not arrive with power and might that should have accompanied the One who declared, "Let there be light!"
The one who separated the light from the darkness and the seas from dry land could have come and destroyed the Roman occupation of the Holy Land. That WAS what was expected.
The King who would liberate Israel would establish His kingdom in Jerusalem forever. Isn't that what the Scriptures foretold? He must be coming in power and might to establish His throne. How could it be any other way?
But God had different plans. He came in the most vulnerable, helpless, weak way to identify with us.
We often feel vulnerable, helpless, and weak, and He wants us to know He's been there and done that.
We are no longer alone in our helpless estate. We can cry out to the God who identifies with us. He became one of us!
Yes, He is fully God, but Jesus is also fully human. He knows what hunger, cold, loneliness, temptation, and betrayal mean.
This Christmas, I pray that the Humble God, lying in a manger, will remind you of His eternal love for you. You would know, without a doubt, that He is for you.
Christmas can be a difficult time for some folks. Please remember those who are alone this season. Remember those spending their first Christmas without the one they most wanted to spend Christmas with.
Remember as you open your gifts and celebrate together, that the reason we give gifts is because of the incomparable gift of eternal life offered for you and for me, was given this day in the form of a baby, asleep in a manger, in a dirty stable in Bethlehem.
I love you very much and wish each of you the merriest of Christmases.
Shalom!
