The Power of Gathering Faithfully for Worship
Reading this will challenge you, doing it will change you!
There is something powerful about God’s people coming together.
We live in a day when people can watch a sermon on their phone, listen to worship music in their car, and even stream a church service from their living room. And thank God for technology. It has its place.
But there is something you cannot replace with a screen.
There is power when God’s people gather together.
The Bible says in Hebrews 10:25, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another.”
God never intended Christianity to be lived completely by ourselves.
Let me give you a simple picture.
Imagine a fireplace on a cold winter night. You have a pile of burning logs sitting together in that fireplace. They are hot. They are glowing. There is heat coming from them.
Now take one of those burning logs and lay it over by itself on the hearth.
For a little while, that log will still be hot. You may even see it glowing.
But give it some time.
The fire begins to die down. The glow fades. The heat disappears.
Why?
Because it was never designed to burn by itself.
Put that log back into the fire with the others, and something begins to happen. The heat from the other logs helps it burn again. The fire catches back up. What was beginning to grow cold becomes hot again.
That’s what gathering with God’s people can do for us.
There are times when life wears us down. There are times when your faith feels weak. There are times when you walk through something that nobody else knows about. There are times when you come to church carrying a burden in your heart and you don’t even feel like being there.
But then somebody shakes your hand.
Somebody puts their arm around you.
Somebody says, “I’ve been praying for you.”
The worship begins.
The Word of God is preached.
And somewhere during that service, you realize, “I’m not alone. God is still with me.”
That’s the power of gathering.
Acts 2 tells us that the early believers continued steadfastly in fellowship, in breaking bread, and in prayers. They didn’t just believe together—they lived life together.
When one rejoiced, they rejoiced together.
When one suffered, they stood together.
When one needed encouragement, somebody was there.
When the church prayed, heaven moved.
When the church worshiped, God’s presence was among them.
We need the church because sometimes somebody else’s faith will help carry us when our own faith is tired.
And there will come a day when somebody sitting beside you will need your faith.
They may walk through those doors smiling, but inside they’re hurting.
They may sing the songs, but they’re fighting battles nobody knows about.
They may say, “I’m doing fine,” when they really aren’t.
And your presence may be one of the very things God uses to encourage them.
That’s why faithful church attendance isn’t just about what you get when you come to church.
It’s also about what you bring.
You bring your worship.
You bring your testimony.
You bring your encouragement.
You bring your prayers.
You bring your faith.
And sometimes, just by showing up, you’re telling somebody else, “You’re not fighting this battle alone.”
Jesus said in Matthew 18:20, “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
There is something special about gathering in Jesus’ name.
So don’t underestimate the power of being in God’s house.
Don’t let a bad week keep you home.
Don’t let disappointment keep you away.
Don’t let a busy schedule convince you that church isn’t important.
And don’t let the enemy isolate you.
Because isolation is where discouragement grows.
But fellowship is where encouragement grows.
Worship reminds us who God is.
The Word reminds us what God has promised.
And our brothers and sisters remind us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
A coal burns longer in the fire than it does by itself.
And Christian, you weren’t created to walk this road alone.
Come to church.
Bring your family.
Worship with God’s people.
Encourage somebody.
Let somebody encourage you.
And when you gather together, don’t just sit in the pew wondering what you’re going to get out of the service.
Come asking, “Lord, who can I encourage today? Who can I pray for? Who can I lift up? Who needs to know that somebody cares?”
Because when God’s people faithfully gather, worship, pray, and encourage one another, something powerful happens.
The fire gets hotter.
Faith gets stronger.
Hearts get encouraged.
And most importantly—
Jesus is lifted up.
