The story of Grace Church began in 1867 with the construction of a log chapel known as Beaverdam Mission. By the 1880s, the mission had taken on the name of the little community in which it was located, Grace. It was designed by Richard Sharpe Smith, an English architect who also supervised the construction of the Biltmore House. By the early 1920s, Grace had reverted to the status a mission. Ther

e was no priest in charge; though, largely due to the leadership of lay readers, Sunday school and services continued until 1949. After several months when no services were held, Bishop George Henry approved the reopening of Sunday School at Grace under the direction of Porter L. Growth and development followed rapidly. In 1960, we became a self-supporting parish under the direction of the Reverend Frederick Volbeda. In 1967, the Rev. William Edwards became our fifth rector. From this time until the Reverend Edwards' retirement in 2000, Grace experienced growth, innovation and solid accomplishment. Grace had grown from 261 communicants to more than 600 with 300 in regular attendance each week. In 2001, The Reverend Gary Coffey became, and is today, the sixth rector of Grace Church.

A Public Stations of the Cross
Grace Episcopal Church invites the greater Asheville community to a public observation of the "Stations of the Cross' (also called "The Way of the Cross"), on April 3, known as Good Friday in the Christian Holy Week before Easter. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m., and participants will gather at the Pack Square stage in downtown Asheville. Traditionally, "The Way of the Cross" follows Jesus on the road to crucifixion. This contemporary adaptation is a walk around Pack Square that invites participants to a public "Way" which views Christ's final moments through the lens of modern examples. Each "station" or stop along the way is replaced with a modern story of the suffering of the innocent. All are invited to join in answering the Biblical call to "mourn with those who mourn." (Romans 12:15)

The Choir is back!
This Sunday, the Choir returns and will sing the chorale movement from Bach’s cantata #22 “Subdue Us, By Thy Goodness. The Choir will also offer Martin Luther’s powerful setting of the Creed using an ancient Gregorian Chant. Accompanying the choir will be oboist, Dr. Alicia Chapman and violinist, Dr. Elizabeth Smith. Along with our very own Dr. Cathy Adkins, they will also play Mozart’s elegant Epistle Sonata in F as the Prelude, and Johan Agrell’s (pictured) sprightly Allegro in G as the Postlude.

Elizabeth recently retired as Professor of violin, viola and chamber music at Marshall University. She holds degrees in violin performance from Yale University, and the Eastman School of Music, Dr. Smith played violin for us this past Christmas Eve.

JOIN THE CHOIR!

Grace is blessed with a talented group of vocalists always ready to offer their gifts to enrich our worship. In a day when people are hesitant to give up their free time, Grace is truly fortunate to have a choir of giving and dedicated singers - a rarity in many churches today.

As we move into the new year, choir rehearsals will take place on Sunday mornings at 9:30. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or just love to make a joyful noise, all voices are welcome! Choir is a wonderful way to connect with others and help enrich or worship services.

If you have any questions or would like more information, contact Jim Cassarino, Music Director at 802-558-6583 (cell) or [email protected]
