Tabor Community Church was established in 1894. Some of those in the community got together and built the original church building for community worship. Sometimes there was a preacher to hold a services but when there was no one else, Grandma Kinney (mother of Robert and his siblings) would come and open the church. She might only have a few children or no one but herself but she was faithful to
be there. God showed her that some day a young man would build a new church there. Burris started holding services there about 1953 but passed away before the new church was built. The little church could not hold all who wanted to attend, and in 1956 Rev. Tommy Kenyon and some helpers laid the cornerstone and built a cement block sanctuary. Later a Sunday School section was built and, later still, a second story was added to that. Improvements have taken place since, and today it has vinyl siding, a metal roof, carpet on the floor, paneling on the walls, padded pews, central air and heat - quite a change from the cement block interior and exterior, cement floor, low-back wooden pews, gas wall furnaces, and open-window air conditioning. Prior to the building of the present church, a tent was pitched and camp meeting was held. This was done for a few years even after the present church was built. Eventually land was given by William Russell for a tabernacle for camp and later a dining room/dormitory was built. Tommy Kenyon, there were several other pastors including: Rev. Carl Antrim, Sr., Rev. Will Barbee, Rev. Michael Neese, Rev. Charles Childs, Rev. Clarence Mullins, Rev. Earl Jordan, Rev. Edward Miller, Rev. Stephen Stowe and Rev. Danny Woodlief, respectively. Stephen passed 9/24/22 & we currently have Rev. David Lambeth as interim pastor. God has blessed, the devil has fought, but God always wins and the church is still being used for worship, and camp meeting is held each year the week of the Fourth of July.
