China has imposed new restrictions banning Catholic priests from preaching, leading prayers, or conducting any religious activities online without prior government approval. The move further tightens the Chinese Communist Party’s control over religious expression in the digital age.
This crackdown reflects Beijing’s ongoing efforts to suppress independent faith communities.
For context, under President Xi Jinping’s “Sinicization” policy, all religions must align with socialist values and submit to state oversight. Catholic churches loyal to the Vatican have faced particular pressure, with many underground priests and bishops targeted. Online ministry — which became vital during COVID lockdowns — is now heavily monitored and restricted through new cybersecurity and religious affairs regulations. Reports from human rights groups document arrests, surveillance, and forced closures of online Christian content.
Christian Daily stands with persecuted believers worldwide and prays for God’s protection over Christians in China. We pray for courage and faithfulness for Catholic priests and all believers facing restrictions. May the Lord open doors for the Gospel despite opposition and soften the hearts of authorities so that true religious freedom may prevail.
Let us remember the words of Matthew 5:10 — “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
