How will you celebrate the gift of Easter?
A Message from the Interim Pastor…
What does Easter mean to you? Is it a day to dress up in springy, pastel-colored clothes, head off to church with the family, pig out on chocolate bunnies and jelly beans, and then feast on a ham dinner with all the fixings? Or is it a day to celebrate the most incredible thing that God has done since God created the universe? Hopefully, it’s both.
When I was a kid, we did all the things I listed except go to church. We got all dressed up in new clothes, ate our fill of chocolate bunnies and jelly beans, and had the big ham dinner. But, instead of going to church, we went to the cemetery to visit my grandmother’s grave. But we didn’t mourn at the grave. We didn’t pray. We weren’t the least bit somber or morose. In fact, we smiled and laughed and took pictures. At the time, I had no idea why we did any of that, but now… now I think I do.
In the Gospel reading for this Sunday we read that the women went to the tomb taking spices with them. When they arrived, they saw that the stone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty. Suddenly, two men in dazzling clothes appeared and told them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen…” The women went to mourn and pray and be somber, and what they encountered was something that gave rise to joy and celebration. What they encountered gave rise to smiling and laughing and picture taking. The tomb was empty!
Easter Sunday is the day we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus – the day that God conquered death once and for all – the greatest thing that God has done since God created the universe. You see, even though we will all die, what happened on that first Easter Sunday is the same thing that awaits us all – the empty tomb! This is why we went to my grandmother’s grave every Easter Sunday – to celebrate that the grave was empty!
Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
Peace and blessing,
Pastor Michael
