Amazing Love Sanctuary

Amazing Love Sanctuary A Progressive Christian Church, founded by Rev. Samuel Lopez. A Church that truly welcomes ALL People. All are welcome, honored, loved, and served at our table.

Its mission is demonstrating Love, Acceptance, Forgiveness, and Grace. The church champions social justice and radical inclusivity. Founded by Pastor Samuel Lopez this congregation affirms and promotes the full participation of persons in our activities and endeavors, including membership, programming, and the calling of clergy without regard to gender, affectional or sexual orientation, race, eth

nicity, nationality, religion, physical or mental challenge or economic circumstance. We are entirely, unequivocally, and unapologetically progressive and inclusive. Our Mission is to live in love, acceptance, forgiveness, and compassion for all. Our Pastor, Rev. Samuel Lopez, is Ordained Ministers with the Progressive Christian Alliance. As a church, we are affiliated with and stand by the Mission Statement of the Progressive Christian Alliance:

"The Progressive Christian Alliance maintains a focus on social justice. We believe that the gospel of Christ calls us to minister to the last, the lost, the least, and the left-out of society. We respect theological diversity. Faith is not about concrete answers, religious absolutes, creeds, or dogma. Faith is about the search for understanding, the raising of important questions, the open honesty of having doubt, and the realization that no one has it all completely right nor does any human hold all the answers. We seek to follow the advice found in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, which is to “seek truth out in all things and hold firmly onto that which is good.” Religious absolutes of dogma, legalism, and strict doctrine become stumbling blocks and “litmus tests” for who is “in” and who is “out” of the circle of God’s grace. These false tests that Jesus never required get in the way of truly following Jesus and his teachings. We affirm the dignity of all of God’s children and invite them to participate fully in the life of the church."

MORNING PRAYER

O Lord, let my soul rise up to meet you
as the day rises to meet the sun.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.
Amen.

Come, let us bow down and bend the knee : let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

I Will Trust in the Lord!

Pour out your Spirit, Lord : that we might dream your dream.

Hear my plea of innocence, O LORD; give heed to my cry : listen to my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.
Let my vindication come forth from your presence : let your eyes be fixed on justice.
Weigh my heart, summon me by night : melt me down; you will find no impurity in me.
Keep me as the apple of your eye : hide me under the shadow of your wings,
from the wicked who assault me :from my deadly enemies who surround me.
~ Psalm 17: 1-3 & 8-9

Pour out your Spirit, Lord : that we might dream your dream.

William Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army, said, “While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight; while children go hungry, as they do now, I’ll fight; while men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight; while there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight — I’ll fight to the very end!”

~ Our Father

Lord, grant us courage to fight the good fight by treating everybody right.
Amen.

“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow:
they neither toil nor spin.”
— Matthew 6:28

“Jesus commands us to consider, or "learn thoroughly" from the lilies. Humanity can often be too manic and consumptive to be good students. We might mimic the schemas of a world obsessed with maintaining egos and empires. That’s why meditation was a New Testament imperative. If we practiced the contentment of the birds, we might realize that the best gift we can give the environment isn't just recycling, but simply “godliness with contentment.”
-Paule Patterson

NOW GO AND DO

Practice rest as acceptance. Set a day to spend, consume, and produce nothing. Just exist as you are, and nothing else.
And consider the lilies!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

~Scripture~
“1 Praise the Lord!
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart,
in the company of the upright, in the congregation.
2 Great are the works of the Lord,
studied by all who delight in them.
3 Full of honor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
4 He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds;
the Lord is gracious and merciful.
5 He provides food for those who fear him;
he is ever mindful of his covenant.
6 He has shown his people the power of his works,
in giving them the heritage of the nations.
7 The works of his hands are faithful and just;
all his precepts are trustworthy.
8 They are established forever and ever,
to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever.
Holy and awesome is his name.
10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
all those who practice it[a] have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever.
~ Psalm 111 (NRSVUE)

Make us students of your way, Lord : that we might study war no more.

~SCRIPTURE ~
“Another time Jesus was praying, and when He finished, one of His disciples approached Him.

Disciple: Teacher, would You teach us Your way of prayer? John taught his disciples his way of prayer, and we’re hoping You’ll do the same.

Jesus: 2 Here’s how to pray:

Father [in heaven], may Your name be revered.
May Your kingdom come.
[May Your will be accomplished on earth
as it is in heaven.]
3 Give us the food we need for tomorrow,
4 And forgive us for our wrongs,
for we forgive those who wrong us.
And lead us away from temptation.
[And save us from the evil one.][a]
5 Imagine that one of your friends comes over at midnight. He bangs on the door and shouts, “Friend, will you lend me three loaves of bread? 6 A friend of mine just showed up unexpectedly from a journey, and I don’t have anything to feed him.” 7 Would you shout out from your bed, “I’m already in bed, and so are the kids. I already locked the door. I can’t be bothered”? 8 You know this as well as I do: even if you didn’t care that this fellow was your friend, if he keeps knocking long enough, you’ll get up and give him whatever he needs simply because of his brash persistence!

9 So listen: Keep on asking, and you will receive. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened for you. 10 All who keep asking will receive, all who keep seeking will find, and doors will open to those who keep knocking.

11 Some of you are fathers, so ask yourselves this: if your son comes up to you and asks for a fish for dinner, will you give him a snake instead? 12 If your boy wants an egg to eat, will you give him a scorpion? 13 Look, all of you are flawed in so many ways, yet in spite of all your faults, you know how to give good gifts to your children. How much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to all who ask!”

Luke 11:1 - 13 (The Voice)

Lord, we must decrease : so that you might increase.

Augustine of Hippo, a fifth-century bishop and theologian, wrote, “The way to Christ is first through humility, second through humility, third through humility. If humility does not precede and accompany and follow every good work we do, if it is not before us to focus on, if it is not beside us to lean upon, if it is not behind us to fence us in, pride will wrench from our hand any good deed we do at the very moment we do it.”

~ MORNING PRAYER~
Lord, we expect good things from you because you are good and you promise to give to those who ask. Teach us to know not only how to ask but also for what we should ask. May all our asking, seeking, and knocking be to further your kingdom in some way, no matter how small or mundane.
Amen.

“Too long have I had my dwelling among those who hate peace. I am for peace, but when I speak, they are for war.”
— Psalm 120:6-7

“I’ve been feeling like a stranger in my own land. My value for peace doesn’t always make sense in a culture obsessed with war, violence, and power. Can you relate? Today, let’s reflect on living as a “red letter Christian” in a violent world.
• What do we need to sustain our love for peace?
• Who are the people who understand and encourage you? • What honest prayers do you need to pray?”

MORNING PRAYER

On May 29, 1968, the Poor People’s Campaign arrived in Washington, D.C. The campaign was established to broaden the civil rights movement to include disadvantaged people of all races. The main demonstration was held at the Mall in Washington, D.C., where people camped out in tents called Resurrection City. Seven thousand demonstrators made this tent city their home to bring attention to issues of poverty and injustice.

We Shall Not Be Moved
Lord, help us stand for justice : and find you among the poor.

Psalm 140:4 - 6
“Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked : protect me from the violent, who are determined to trip me up.
The proud have hidden a snare for me and stretched out a net of cords : they have set traps for me along the path.
I have said to the LORD, “You are my God : listen, O LORD, to my supplication.”

Lord, help us stand for justice : and find you among the poor.

Mississippi civil rights activist Fannie Lou Hamer said, “Christianity is being concerned about your fellow man, not building a million-dollar church while people are starving right around the corner. Christ was a revolutionary person, out there where it was happening. That’s what God is all about, and that’s where I get my strength.”

~ MORNING PRAYER ~
Help us, Lord, to do the one thing that is necessary: to tend to the poor, to walk alongside the poor, to find you among the poor, to declare ourselves poor as long as anyone suffers need. May we begin this journey with just one person today. Amen.

~ Morning Prayer~

Rahab
Rahab’s story is found in the book of Joshua. Rahab was a pr******te who hid Hebrew spies in her home while they were on a reconnaissance mission in Jericho. Fearing the God of Israel more than her own king, Rahab agreed to help the spies if they would protect her and her family when God delivered her city to them. Though she is an unlikely saint, Rahab is remembered by the authors of Matthew, Hebrews, and James as a faithful witness and an ancestor of Jesus. Her story is a reminder that sinners make the best saints in God’s story.

O Lord, let my soul rise up to meet you
as the day rises to meet the sun.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.
Amen.
Come, let us sing to the LORD: let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

~ SCRIPTURE~
I lift up my eyes to the hills : from where is my help to come?
My help comes from the LORD: the maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved : and he who watches over you will not fall asleep.
The LORD shall preserve you from all evil : it is he who shall keep you safe.
The LORD shall watch over your going out and your coming in : from this time forth for evermore.
Psalm 121

Take My Life and Let It Be…

~Scripture~
You are my refuge and shield : my hope is in your word.
Away from me, you wicked! : I will keep the commandments of my God.
Sustain me according to your promise, that I may live : and let me not be disappointed in my hope.
Hold me up, and I shall be safe : and my delight shall be ever in your statutes.
Psalm 119:114-117

Like a hen gathers her brood, O Lord : shelter us under your wing.

Indian priest Anthony de Mello told this story:
“A rich industrialist from the North was horrified to find a Southern fisherman lying leisurely beside his boat. ‘Why aren’t you fishing?’ asked the industrialist.
“ ‘Because I have caught enough fish for the day,’ said the fisherman.
“ ‘Why don’t you catch some more?’
“ ‘What would I do with them?’
“ ‘You could earn more money,’ was the reply. ‘With that, you could fix a motor to your boat, go into deeper waters and catch more fish. Then you would make enough money to buy nylon nets. These would bring you more fish and more money. Soon you would have enough money to own two boats . . . maybe even a fleet of boats. Then you would be a rich man like me.’
“ ‘What would I do then?’
“ ‘Then you could really enjoy life.’
“ ‘What do you think I am doing right now?’ said the fisherman.”
