During this Lenten season, we are sharing some thoughtful devotionals written by members of our congregation.

A World of Love

“You shall have no other God before Me.” Exodus 20:3

“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in Him.” 1 John 4:8 and 16

My husband and I were fortunate to be able to do a three-day layover in Istanbul, Turkey, while on a European trip last Fall. Our hotel, located in the heart of the old town, was very near to the Blue Mosque. Excited to make the most of our time, we hired a local guide. Our guide was a knowledgeable and personable 30-year-old Muslim man, who had majored in history and spoke English.

One morning, we were standing in the Blue Mosque, studying the mosaic images on the walls as our guide explained that the Mosque had been used alternately as a house of worship for Muslims and Christians, depending on who was in power. Twice I noticed the guide using the word “gods” when speaking about worship. (Was it a translation issue or something else, I wondered?) I was curious and asked him how many gods he worshipped. “I worship only one God,” he explained quite emphatically. I apologized and explained that I was confused by his use of a plural form of the word and asked him to tell me about his God. He responded, “The God I worship is the one true God who created heaven and earth. The God I worship is an all-powerful and merciful God, infinitely good and just, and a God of great love for all people.” I smiled at him, “As Christians, we worship the same God as you do,” I said. He returned a warm, genuine smile.

Creator God, the Alpha and the Omega, the one true God of the universe, we bow our heads before You. We pray for a world free from hate and filled with love and acceptance toward those who are different. We pray for peace and unity with all people on this earth. Amen.

During this Lenten season, we're sharing devotionals written by members of our congregation. Here's some wisdom to take with you as you spring forward today!

Matthew 3:13-17 The Escape to Egypt story where Joseph takes Mary and the Christ Child to Egypt to avoid Herod’s child massacre.
Matthew 26:36-46 The Garden of Gethsemane story ending with the pending arrest of Jesus by the Sanhedrin’s armed guards.

Two small words that impact our lives daily: Yes and No. What do we say Yes to, and what do we say No to? During this Lenten season, we would do well to reflect on the life of Jesus and the pivotal choices he made.

But perhaps we should best start with the Yes that Jesus heard from His Heavenly Father. That Yes sent Him on His public ministry. It happened at the Jordan River, when John baptized Him. Jesus heard that defining Yes in those words, “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.”

With these words ringing in his ear, Matthew next tells of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. What would Jesus’ ministry be like … one of power, prestige, and self-service? Or one of love, care, and in the service of others? We know what Jesus chose, right up to the end when his prayer in Gethsemane was to do his Father’s will. And that has made all the difference.

Thank You, God, for your Yes in my life, assuring me that I am your beloved child. May I choose to say Yes to a life of love, care, and service to others. Amen.

Throughout the Lenten season, we will be posting a few devotionals that members of the Arrow Rock Federated Church have written. Here, on this Ash Wednesday, is the first:

“Perhaps you were born for such a time as this.” Esther 4:14

Six Brief Stories Full of Meaning (Author Unknown)

1. Once all villagers decided to pray for rain. On the day of prayer, all the people gathered, but only one boy came with an umbrella. That is faith.
2. When you throw babies in the air, they laugh because they know you will catch them. That is trust.
3. Every night we go to bed without any assurance of being alive the next morning, but we set alarms to wake up. That is hope.
4. We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future. That is confidence.
5. We see the world suffering, but still, we get married and have children. That is love.
6. On an old man’s shirt was written a sentence “I am 80 years old; I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience." That is attitude.

Have a happy day, and live your life like these six stories. Remember: Good friends are the rare jewels of life--difficult to find and impossible to replace.

Father, help us to learn your plan for us in faith, trust, hope, confidence, love and attitude lessons each day so that we may become the person you mean us to be. Amen.

Glenn North is the playwright and poet for "Consummate Showman." In 2012, Glenn wrote an essay for the Kansas City Museum’s Community Curator series on Doc Brown where he calls Doc a consummate showman. Glenn concludes his essay by saying that history is “a tricky thing for black folks. It is often times a source of pain and shame. But people like Doctor William Henry Joseph Cutter Brown provide these incredible occasions when history offers us joy and pride.” Doc’s voice is important, and we’re so pleased to offer him a platform to share it. Join us at 10 am on May 4 at the Old Schoolhouse in Arrow Rock for the performance.

When Kansas City artist Millard C. Haywood painted the portrait of William Henry Joseph Cutter “Doc” Brown in 1896 and Charles L. Johnson composed the Doc Brown ragtime in 1899, they captured the image and the essence of a consummate showman whose celebrity in the Victorian era was rooted in Saline County. As Haywood paints and Johnson composes, we learn that Doc Brown was born in 1835 enslaved to Meredith Miles Marmaduke, the 8th governor of Missouri, grew up on the Marmaduke plantation near Arrow Rock where he learned the art of cakewalking, a dance in which enslaved people mimicked their owner’s promenading at balls, and after emancipation moved to Kansas City, where he rose to prominence as an entertainer.
