The Next Generation

Every healthy church must ask not only, “Who is leading us today?” but also, “Who are we preparing to lead tomorrow?”

Paul understood this. Near the end of his ministry, he challenged Timothy to take what he had learned and entrust it to others: “What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2). Paul’s vision was never simply to preserve his ministry. It was to multiply it.

Raising up younger leaders is not about replacing older generations. It is about passing the baton. Experienced leaders provide wisdom, perspective, and spiritual maturity; younger leaders bring energy, new ideas, and a willingness to reach people in ways previous generations may not have considered.

So how do we do it?

First, notice potential. Look beyond who is already serving and ask, “Who has gifts, character, and a heart for Jesus that could be developed?”

Second, invite them in. Give younger people meaningful opportunities to serve—not merely jobs to fill, but responsibilities that matter.

Third, mentor them. Let them serve alongside experienced leaders. Explain not only what you are doing, but why.

Fourth, give them room to lead. They will sometimes do things differently than we would. That is not necessarily a problem. Growth requires responsibility, trust, and even the freedom to make mistakes.

Finally, pray for them and encourage them. Tell them when you see God working through their lives. Believe in them before they fully believe in themselves.

The church becomes stronger when every generation invests in the next. We are not merely building a church for today. We are preparing disciples and leaders who will carry Christ’s mission into tomorrow.

A Clean Welcome

A clean and tidy church may seem like a small thing, but it can communicate something important about who we are and what we believe.

Our church is more than a building. It is a place where we bring our families and friends to meet Jesus. It is where children grow in faith, visitors search for hope, hurting people find encouragement, and people experience the love of Christ.

When someone walks through our doors, they notice things. They notice whether the entrance is welcoming, whether the restrooms are clean, whether the sanctuary is orderly, and whether the grounds are cared for. Before they hear a sermon or sing a hymn, they have already experienced something about our church.

Cleanliness communicates care. It says, “You are welcome here. You matter to us. We have prepared this place for you.”

But keeping our church clean and attractive cannot be the responsibility of our custodial crew alone. It belongs to all of us.

Paul reminds us, “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). That includes the things nobody notices—the piece of paper we pick up, the chair we straighten, the spill we clean, or the trash we carry out.

We don't need to wait for a workbee or assume someone else will take care of things. If we see something that needs attention, perhaps God has given us an opportunity to serve.

Let's each do our part. When we care for our church, we help prepare a place where our families, friends, neighbors, and strangers can encounter Jesus.

A clean church is more than a tidy building. It is part of our witness.
