I realized I forgot to send out the Sacred Word of the Week. This week is Kindness. The passage is Ruth 2. It ties in very well with the coming Youth Sunday.

Shalom.

RCCC Youth Sacred Word of the Week:
Hello all-
The sacred word of the week this week is sacred. Doesn't do much good to have one unless we have an understanding of sacred. I fear that one of the big disservices we have done is to make some places- Sunday worship, church camp, a mission site, a mountain, sacred and not looked at how God is working in all areas of our life and as such there is sacredness to be found everywhere we are. Look through the chaos and you can see sacred moments happening in the Houston area everyday right now. The scripture is Psalm 15. Hope your family finds joy as you look for the sacred.
Shalom

I am trying something new this year and hope you will let me know if it turns into something helpful for your families. Each week I will send out a sacred word of the week. Like most things, sacredness really comes from how we treat them. Here are some suggestions for using the word of the week.
Define it.
Has it come up recently?
What has it meant in your lives?
Talk about the word and why it would be sacred over dinner one night.
Use the word as a centering prayer. In centering prayer you try to clear your mind completely and use the sacred word to bring you back to clear if you start to wander in your mind.
Use the scripture as a divine reading. Read it 3 times, don't worry about the context or what the author was saying. The first time try to find a word or small phrase that stands out in the scripture, pause after the first reading to contemplate the word or phrase, read the scripture again, ask yourself why that word would be a word from God for you, read the passage a third time, ask what God wants you to do because of the message of that word.
Do something together as a family to represent that word- make a piece of art, go somewhere in nature to experience it, do something for others that lives it, etc.

I hope this is life-giving in your family.

The sacred word for this week is Renew. The scripture is Romans 12:2.

Shalom.

Here is the link for the March Madness Fundraiser. Sorry it is so late coming out. Technical difficulties with computer and internet access at work and school this week.
If you weren't at church Sunday, then here is the plan. Follow the link to pick your bracket. Each bracket filled out is a commitment to give $10 to the youth mission trip fund.
The person who has the best bracket gets to formally present the money raised to the youth in front of the church (and gloat about their basketball picking superiority!).
That is almost it. If a youth wins, then I will personally pay $10 of their mission trip this summer.
Thanks to Kevin richardson for setting up the link and pool.

E-Blast # 4 1-30-13

Confession:
One last partial week of confession- Holy Spirit- what do you think the nature/character of the Holy Spirit is?
How do you relate the Creator (Yahweh, Father,God), Christ (Jesus, Reconciler), and Consummator (Holy Spirit, Fulfiller) persons of God to your understanding?
Does it help to know that Elohim (a Hebrew Bible or Old Testament name for God) is plural? What does it do that the Spirit of God is usually a female term or occasionally a neutral term in Bible languages?
Hint: There will always be differences of opinion about these understandings because we are trying to describe the incomprehensible. It is still okay to try to understand.
If Xander, Robin, and I can talk about these things, then so can you!

When did you first realize God loved you? What made you realize that?

When did you first realize YOU loved God? What did you do about that?

E-Blast # 3 1-21-13

Confession: Late last week I added a note on facebook toward the end of the week:

Another way of coming at this confession--when did you first realize God loved you? What made you realize that?

There is a follow up question to when did you know God loved you. It is, “When did you first realize YOU loved God?

To carry on from next week- there was a man named Jesus- he’s called the son of God- what do you believe about him?

One thought is that some denominations focus on the teachings of Jesus, some focus on the crucifixion, and some focus on the resurrection? What do you think the differences would be? Where do you focus the most?

E-Blast #2 1-14-13

Confession: Confession has two meanings-both of which apply to our relationship with God- the first is to admit to wrongdoing (think of a criminal court) the other was described by Xander as “what I believe and not what others think”.
This second confession of belief is what we are discussing.

When Christians have come together over the ages they have looked for common ground on who God is- out of that have come creeds or affirmations of faith. Here are some examples:

Apostle’s Creed begins ”I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth”

Nicene Creed begins, “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of all things visible and invisible.”

Disciples (of Christ) Affirmation of faith says of God “We rejoice in God, maker of heaven and earth, and in God’s covenant of love which binds us to God and to one another” and “In the bonds of Christian faith, we yield ourselves to God that we may serve the One whose kingdom has no end.”

These hold agreement on “who” God is. Differences tend to start on what the nature of God is, so that is the heart of the questions for your family this week. What is the nature/character of God? How do you believe that?

I told you last week I would give conversion examples for Peter from the other three gospels:
Matthew 14- Jesus walks on water- peter asks to come out to him- as Peter looks away and begins to sink he calls out " Save me, Lord" and Jesus does....Luke 5- Jesus tells them to cast the nets on the other side of the boat and their nets are so full that their boat and James and John's boat are sinking. Peter falls on his knees and asks Jesus to leave him because he is a sinful man.... John 21- the risen Jesus asks Peter 3 times if he loves him and he answers "Lord you know that I love you."
