One great teacher can change a life. Most of us can remember someone whose encouragement, expectations, or clarity helped us learn and grow.

In that spirit, Volunteer Coordinator Sadeka Haque thoughtfully planned, and hosted, our annual Volunteer Teacher Appreciation Dinner. More than 30 volunteers, family members, and staff from our Education Workforce Development Ministry gathered for an evening of gratitude, fellowship, and celebration.

“Mr. Lee” as he is called, has faithfully supported our adult education program for 10 years. Volunteer teachers like Mr. Lee are at the heart of our ministry, empowering students with the skills, confidence, and encouragement needed to pursue new opportunities and greater self-sufficiency.

We are deeply grateful for our EWD volunteers and staff, whose compassion, generosity, and commitment continue to create opportunities for hope, growth, and belonging.

We also wish to recognize one of our youth volunteers, whose poem was recently selected for publication in an anthology of the National High School Poets after winning a national poetry competition. His achievement is a wonderful reminder of the many gifts and talents shared by those who serve our community. Please take a moment and read his poem below.

"The Unlikely Scholars"

In that room, I’m teacher and student.
Many earthlings come around one table—
Guam beside Guatemala,
Senegal beside Seoul.
We trade dreams, while practicing diction,
grammar rules are kinder than immigration laws.
A young woman learns the word hope,
she boldly writes it on paper
and makes a promise to her future.
A grandfather laughs as he stumbles over sentences:
the sound of starting over.
There, language is a metaphor for belonging,
we do not just learn English.
We conjure courage.
We learn that home is not an address or a country,
It is where I can be who I am.

Bishop O'Connell High School students had a wonderful and fruitful day of service at the Christ House Kitchen and Clothing Closet last week!

They enjoyed making PBJ sandwiches, Banana-Bread pudding and tuna salad for our evening meal guests. They also planted flowers in front of our Clothing Closet, and organized the clothes and cleaned the area.

They joyfully worked behind the scenes to assist others. Thank you and God bless you!

President and CEO Stephen Carattini participated in the Director of Youth and Campus Ministry Annual Meeting for the Catholic Diocese of Arlington. The 3-day event happens each Spring and is a combination of retreat and conference and was being held this year at Loyola on the Potomac Retreat Center in Faulkner, MD from May 12-14.

Stephen’s presentation was on Catholic Social Teaching, which is a part of the 24-course Certificate of Youth Ministry studies offered by the Diocese and accredited by Franciscan University of Steubenville. He gave a wonderful overview of the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching, explained how Catholic Charities offers programs and resources which address each of these principles, and then the 40 participants “workshopped” ideas on how they can live out each of these principles with the young people in their parishes and College Campus Ministries.
