About American Guild of Organists
The purposes of the American Guild of Organists are:

1. To advance the cause of organ

and choral music, to increase their contributions to aesthetic and religious experiences, and to promote their understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment.

2. To evaluate, by examination, attainments in organ playing, choral techniques, conducting, and the theory and general knowledge of music, and to grant certificates to those who pass such examinations at specified levels of attainment.

4. To provide members with opportunities to meet for discussion of professional topics, and to pursue such other activities as contribute to the fulfillment of the purposes of the Guild.

Free! The public is welcome at the film premiere and mini-recital on September 28 at 7:30 pm at Christ Church in Alexandria. Please help spread the word! UCLA Professor and Director of EarmarkFilms, Eric Marin, created this fine documentary. It's a rare chance to see organs that Bach played and learn of the walk he made to Lübeck in 1705-1706 to learn from Dietrich Buxtehude. It features performances by the current organists in churches where Bach played and by notable German-American organist Christoph Bull. The screening of this charming and fascinating 30-minute movie will be complemented by live performances — Buxtehude's Toccata in D minor, Bux155, and Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G, BWV541, played on the Harrison & Harrison organ Northern Virginia AGO members Chris Betts and JJ Mitchell. Bach in film and music! You can sign up for our September 28 dinner now. (Premiere and mini-recital are open to the public). The dinner will be fun and includes a chance to pick up organ music from Ted Gustin's library, for free (but donations accepted).

Seen in St. Louis! The national AGO convention was great. Our own Janet Yieh, Organist was a featured recitalist July 7, wowing the audience despite a late venue change. JJ Mitchell won third place in the improvisation competition. He's former Chapter Dean and now Treasurer. Also, Sub-Dean Chris Betts was there exhibiting for Solid State Organ Systems. And Dean Chris Hoh was on a composer panel organized by Lorenz Publishing. Several more chapter members attended. Too many to name here, but please post your pictures and comments!

Congratulations to John "JJ" Mitchell for winning third place in the nationwide improvisation competition of the American Guild of Organists! We are so proud of our former Dean for making it to the finals in St. Louis and then to go on and win one of the prizes. Can't wait to hear you playing again when you're back home!
