Midweek Message – May 27, 2026
At the very end of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus approaches his remaining eleven disciples and gives them what is called “The Great Commission.” He tells them to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” (28:19). This is a remarkable statement when we consider the fact that the disciples were people without power, wealth or authority in worldly affairs. Neither were they free from serious human flaws. Peter, their leader, denied Jesus after all. In addition, they are an incomplete group, for Judas’ absence is evident in their number.
To the disciples, vulnerable and flawed both collectively and individually, Jesus gave a seemingly impossible task: to make disciples of all the nations. Yet, every Christian today is a testament to those who have accepted that commission. Looking back, we can see evidence of Jesus’ promise when he said, “I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.” (28:20) The disciples were never alone and neither are we. The call and the promise remain for all who decide to follow Christ.
