The Holy See Press Office on Tuesday evening released a statement about Pope Leo’s surgery stating: “The intraoperative frozen-section examination confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma [a type of non-small cell lung cancer], as suspected from the preoperative tests.”

The statement also said “the Holy Father was in the operating room for approximately three hours; the operation itself lasted approximately 90 minutes. The operation was successful, and there were no complications.”

“Following the operation, the pope awoke normally and, after a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the 10th floor.”

The Day the Sun Spun: The Miracle of Fatima, 109 years ago today

The apparition of Our Lady at Fatima was followed by an unusual solar phenomenon, reported in newspapers and seen by many witnesses.

On October 13, 1917, approximately seventy thousand people, from all over Portugal, gathered in Fatima. For many weeks, the news of the apparition of the “Lady” and the miracle she promised to do had spread and among the crowd were people from every walk of life and profession: upper class citizens, engineers, doctors, notaries and, of course, journalists and photographers.

Heavy rain fell. The three young visionaries — Francisco, Jacinta and Lucia — arrived with their family members, and they began to pray the Rosary. At noon, with the rain still falling, Lucia gave the order to close the umbrellas and the crowd obeyed. Moments later, things brightened and those present noticed a white cloud moving around the group.

Lucia asked: “Who are you and what do you want from me?” This time the heavenly Lady said she was the Lady of the Rosary and she wanted a chapel built in her honor in that place. She told Lucia to remember to pray the rosary and announced that she would heal some of the sick present. The Lady ended by calling for conversion.

After saying this, she opened her hands, which reflected the sun. Lucia cried, “Look at the sun!” The thick clouds had split open and the sun began to spin, change color, and dance in the sky as it gradually got closer to the earth. This was the miracle given that all would believe.

The Bishop of Leiria, in his pastoral letter on the Our Lady of Fatima apparitions wrote: “The solar phenomenon of October 13, 1917, was reported and described in the newspapers. It was most wonderful and left an indelible impression on those who were present. This phenomenon, that no astronomical observatory has recorded, and was not natural, was seen by people of all classes and social classes, believers and unbelievers, journalists of the leading Portuguese newspapers, and even individuals from several kilometers away from the place where they were; which dispels any explanation of collective illusion. ”

THE POWERFUL MEANINGS BEHIND THE 3 ARCHANGELS’ NAMES

Every September 29, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels. Their names are more than simple titles: each contains the Hebrew element “El,” meaning “God,” pointing to their identity as servants and messengers of God.
Pope Benedict XVI highlighted this connection, explaining that God is “inscribed” in the names of the three Archangels.

🛡️ 1. ST. MICHAEL — “WHO IS LIKE GOD?”

The name Michael comes from the Hebrew Mi-ka-el and means “Who is like God?”

It is expressed as a question, but it also proclaims a profound truth: no one is like God.

St. Michael appears in the Book of Daniel, the Letter of Jude, and the Book of Revelation. In Revelation 12:7, Michael and his angels fight against the dragon.

The Catholic Church therefore honors St. Michael as the archangel associated with defending God's people against evil. Catholic liturgical sources identify him with the battle against Satan and the defense of God's friends.

His name is a proclamation of God's greatness.

🕊️ 2. ST. GABRIEL — “GOD IS MY STRENGTH”

The name Gabriel means “strength of God” or
“God is my strength.”

Gabriel's biblical mission beautifully reflects his name.

He appears to Zechariah to announce the birth of John the Baptist. Then God sends him to the Virgin Mary to announce the coming of Jesus Christ:

“You will conceive in your womb and bear a son.”
—Luke 1:31

Gabriel's announcement to Mary concerns the Incarnation, the coming of the Son of God in human flesh. The Catechism identifies Gabriel as the angel who announces the births of John the Baptist and Jesus.

Pope Benedict XVI called Gabriel “the messenger of God's Incarnation.” Through his message, Mary was invited to give her “yes” to God's plan.

His name reminds us that God's strength can accomplish what human strength cannot.

❤️ 3. ST. RAPHAEL — “GOD HEALS”

The name Raphael comes from Rafa-El and means “God heals” or “God's remedy.”

Raphael's story is found principally in the Book of Tobit.

He accompanies Tobiah on his journey, helps him, and is connected with the healing of Tobit's blindness. At the conclusion of the story, Raphael reveals:

“I am Raphael, one of the seven angels who stand and serve before the Glory of the Lord.”
—Tobit 12:15

The Church therefore remembers Raphael in connection with God's healing and guidance.

His name reminds us that true healing ultimately comes from God.

✨ WHAT THE THREE NAMES HAVE IN COMMON

There is something beautiful hidden in all three names.

Micha-EL — Who is like God?
Gabri-EL — God is my strength.
Rapha-EL — God heals.

The ending “El” refers to God. Pope Benedict XVI also emphasized that the names of the three archangels end with “El,” signifying God, and that their names reveal that their existence is oriented toward Him.

Their names can therefore be remembered as three powerful reminders:

🛡️ MICHAEL: Who is like God?
🕊️ GABRIEL: God is my strength.
❤️ RAPHAEL: God heals.

And their missions ultimately point to the same truth: the angels serve God and lead us toward Him, not toward themselves.

PRAYER TO THE THREE ARCHANGELS

St. Michael,
help me remember that no one is like God.

St. Gabriel,
help me trust that God is my strength.

St. Raphael,
help me remember that God is my healer.

Holy Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael,
pray for us and lead us closer to the Lord whom you serve.
Amen.
