With the Memorial Day Holiday coming up next Monday... 27 students, parents, and three teachers from the 4th grade classes at Argyle Central School and several members of Argyle American Legion Post 1518 helped to place new American flags today on the graves of nearly 280 deceased military service members.

The yearly tradition of placing US flags at the gravestones of veterans and fire department flags on those who served our local Argyle Fire Department started many years ago and today honors so many who have contributed to our Nation and to our community and who are buried here within our cemetery.

Ron, our cemetery superintendent, has been hard at work after such a long winter and we hope you will find time soon to come and find a peaceful and reflective moment among our 3,300+ memorials.

With today, 25 March, recognized as National Medal of Honor Day here in the United States we take a moment to remember Pvt. Robert B. Scott of the 8th U.S. Calvary. Pvt. Scott earned the Medal of Honor on 20 October 1869 for gallantry in action in the Arizona Territory.

Robert, who lived in Argyle for much of his life, and his wife Ida Sill Scott are buried in Section 1 of our cemetery.

Goose Island Tree & Landscape has been hard at work these last few days helping to remove two... couple hundred year old trees which may have been on the land when the Cemetery was created back in the mid-1800's. Unfortunately those trees had become safety hazards. Bill and his crew also trimmed up several more limbs and branches on trees which were saved.

Thank you Goose Island!!

With the weather cooperating today... the 4th grade students and teachers of Argyle Central School came to our cemetery with the help of Argyle Legion Post 1518 to place new American flags on the approximately 270 graves of military veterans buried here. Each year a new group of 4th graders helps with this endeavor and their efforts, along with members of J.A. Barkley Hose Co. who place flags at deceased members of the Fire Department, honor those who have served our nation and our community. We thank them all for greatly adding to the beauty of our cemetery.

In what is fast becoming a tradition... 4th graders from Argyle Central School came this morning to place new American flags on the grave sites of our nearly 300 veterans who are buried at the cemetery. Argyle American Legion Post 1518 keeps a record of the veterans buried here which includes service men and women who have served since the early 1800's to present day.

We thank the students and teachers for honoring those who have served our Armed Forces and we appreciate the American Legion for helping to remember those who have served.

In a prelude to our upcoming Cemetery Open House this Saturday morning... several members and friends of the nearby Argyle American Legion Post 1518 came by to do some tree and bush trimming. We thank Post Commander Mike, Treasurer Rick, Sargent at Arms Richard, Sarah, Judy, and Stephen all under the able supervision of Cemetery Superintendent Ron for a great effort to help beautify our cemetery. The Cemetery has approximately 390 veteran burials stretching back to veterans of the War of 1812. Later this month, Argyle elementary school children will be here to place American flags at each of those graves.

Thank you to all for your hard work and for making our cemetery such a peaceful place to reflect on our ancestors.
