Self Control

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in the present age (Titus 2:11-12 ESV)

One of the great challenges we face as we seek to adhere to the will of God and live in a way that will please and honor Him is that of self-control. Have you ever heard someone say "I just can't control myself." Self control is one of the fruits of the Spirit found in Gal. 5:22-23. Self control is one the things that Peter tells us to add to our faith in 2 Pet.1:6-8. Self control was a part of the inspiring message Paul preached to Felix (Acts 24:25).

The present age in which we live is one in which we are surrounded with all manner of unrighteousness, wickedness and immorality. It is a time in which we see so many people running wild, putting little or no restraint on their words or deeds.. In fact many are the people doing whatever is right in their own eyes regardless of what is right in the eyes of God. Self control centers around the ability to keep emotions under control. We see and feel the results of a failure to control emotions unfold before us in the unrest socially and politically occurring daily all around us.

Proverbs 16:32: "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city." These words were spoken in a time when one of the greatest accomplishments for a man was the taking or capture of a city. But even in that time long ago, Solomon teaches us that the greatest accomplishment of all is to conquer self --self control!

Conquering of self will engage us in one of most severe conflicts we will ever face on this journey through life. On the other hand, learning self control is one of the sweetest victories of this life. Losing self control will put us on a downward path that lets emotion and passion turn our faith into a shipwreck (1 Tim. 1;19). It will take a lot of self control to keep our heart as it should be kept (Prov. 4:23; Prov. 23:7; 1 Cor. 9:27)

Exercising self control will enable us to follow some good advice from Solomon: "Let your eyes look directly ahead and let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you."

To God be the glory both now and until the day of eternity (2 Peter 3:18).

The Days of Our Years

"The days of our years are three-score and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away."--Psalms 90:10

A careful study of Psalms 90 will leave us with an indelible impression of the how quickly time passes. Our days are like grass that flourishes and grows but suddenly withers or is cut down. Our days are portrayed as a tale that is told and quickly comes to an end (vs 5-9). Realizing that our stay on this earth is brief and will quickly come to an end makes the words of Psalms 39:4 most meaningful: "Lord, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is; that I may know how frail I am". Our lives are for but a brief span of time and thoughtful consideration of this from time to time should serve to encourage us to make the most of each moment. None of us knows when, where or how we are going to die. The only thing we know for certain is that the day is coming when our hearts will beat for the last time on this earth and we will fly away ( Eccl. 9:5, Heb. 9:27).

Having said all of this, I now say that there is no doubt that all of us have experienced some great days during our sojourn on planet earth but there is coming for each of us a day that will surpass all other days in greatness (Rom. 14:12, Acts 17:30-31). That day of accounting will be a grand and glorious day for those who have obeyed the Lord (heard him, believed him, repented, confessed him, had their sins washed away in baptism and lived faithfully for him--John14:15, Mark 16:16, Acts 17:30, Rom. 10. 10, Acts 2:38, 22:16, Rev. 2:10). It will be a sad, sorrowful day for all who have never obeyed the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Peter 4:17-18, 2 Thess. 1:7-9). The moment we breath that last breath and step out into eternity, our eternal destiny is sealed forever. That destiny will be one of two places. There is the destiny called hell; a place of everlasting punishment, a place of torment where there is wailing and gnashing of teeth; a place where the vilest of people will be (Matt. 25:30, Gal. 5:19-21, Rev. 21:8). I have no doubt that all of us have experienced some tremendous pain in this life, physical and mental, but none of that pain can begin to compare with the pain and agony found in the place called hell. Then there is the place called heaven, a place of eternal bliss, happiness and joy. A place with no tears, no death, no sorrow, just pure joy forever and ever (1 Cor. 2:9, Rev. 21:1-6, 22:1-7).

Death--yes, When--uncertain, Then--Heaven or Hell. Our eternal destiny is going to be based on how we have used this great gift of life, based upon whether or not we have obeyed the Lord Jesus Christ to the best of our ability. Now is the moment of truth: If you were to fly away in the next moment, what would be your eternal destiny. Perhaps all of us would do well to follow Paul's admonition to the Corinthians, "Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves----" (2 Cor. 13:5).

To God be glory now and forever!

The Great Choice We Face

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. But if I am to live on in the flesh this will mean fruitful labor for me, and I do not know which to choose. But I am hard pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better (Philippians 1:21-23)

This is truly a marvelous statement, one that we should pause from time to time and give some serious, soul searching thought to as it regards our life. You see, as a child of God, we are faced with the same dilemma as Paul faced. life or death. He was prepared for either one. The question for us becomes, are we prepared for either one?

If we are going to be prepared for either life or death, then Christ must mean everything to us in this life. I love the thought expressed in the song, He is My Everything: "He is . my everything, He is my all. He is my everything both great and small." When we make Him our everything, we live our life by faith in the Son of God who loved us so much He died on the cross of Calvary, shedding His blood to make it possible for us to be cleansed of our sins and truly live (Galatians 2:20; Romans 5:8-9; Colossians 1:12-14; John 10:9-11).

If we give our lives to Him, do what the Lord says (Col 3:17; John 2:1-5), strive each day to prove that we are His friend (John 15:14), and by word and deed recommend Him to others (1 Tim. 4:12; Titus 2:6-8), then one day when we come to the end of life's journey we will gain the greatest victory imaginable as we go home to be with the Lord (2 Cor. 5:8).

The prayer of my heart for all who read these words is expressed so well in the first verse of the song, Hold To God's Unchanging Hand: "Time is filled with swift transition-Naught of earth unmoved can stand-Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God's unchanging hand." Hear the words of John, "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on! Yes, says the Spirit, so that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them." To God be the glory!

When I Am Fearful

Fear thou not; for I am with thee; be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness (Isaiah 41:10)

Even though this is an exceedingly precious promise made long ago to Israel at time when they were a people heavily burdened, it is a promise that is applicable to His people of all times and thus it is a promise given to you and I today (Heb. 13:5-6; Rom. 8:31; Heb. 4:16; 2 Tim 1:7; Eph 3:16-21; Phil. 4:13).

Will our human frame ever be engulfed with a fearful feeling? Will we ever be afraid? The answer is a resounding, Yes! Life has a way of becoming scary sometimes. No matter how strong we feel ourselves to be, there will always be those things that will cause us to be afraid. It is not a matter of whether or not we our hearts will be afraid, it is only a matter of how we will react in those moments when fear of something causes us to be afraid.

Is it possible for fear and faith to be in our heart at the same time? I believe it is. Hear these words of David, "Be merciful unto me O God . . . . . . .Even when I am afraid, I keep on trusting you" (Psalms 56:1-3). David was a man after God's own heart yet he did not hesitate to admit that there were times when he was afraid. Trusting the Lord in those moments when we are afraid is evidence of a conquering faith (Rom. 8:31-37). When the Lord is the strength of our lives, fear will only draw us closer to Him thus it really becomes a blessing in disguise. What a wonderful journey this will be when we live each day with our eyes focused on the Lord, trusting Him with all our heart (Heb. 12:1-3).

Helen Keller was blind and lived her life in darkness. One day I came across these words attributed to her: "It's wonderful to climb the liquid mountains of the sky. Behind me and before me is God and I have no fears." When I read these words, I was struck with the thought that when we trust God, there is really no room for fear to dwell in our heart. When we turn our fear over to God, He will in turn give to us that measure of courage and peace that will lift us up (Heb. 13:5; John 14:26; Heb. 4:16).

"Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary" (Isa. 40:31)

Boast Not Of Tomorrow

"You do not know what your life will be like tomorrow...." James 4:14.

We are a people who regularly make plans for something we intend to do at a later date. We often make plans for where we are going to go tomorrow and what we are going to do when we get there. We plan to attend events or make vacation plans months in advance. Yet none of us know what our life will be like an hour, a day or a month from now (James 4:13-16). Tomorrow can be, and often is, a most dangerous word. We should, yea we must understand that our lives must not be lives solely of "I intend".

How many kind words of encouragement have we left unspoken? How many times have we failed to just say "I love you"? How many opportunities have we lost to help strengthen someone carrying a heavy burden (Galatians 6:10; Proverbs 3:27; Matthew 5:16)? How many people know what they should do to inherit eternal life? They have heard and even believe (Rom. 10:17; Mark 16:16; Gal. 3:22) but have not repented, confessed and been baptized for the remission of sins (Luke 13:3; Matt.10:32-33; Acts 2:38). How many people have done this but are not being faithful (Rev. 2:10; 1 Cor. 15:58)? Over the years I have heard individuals say, "I know I should do this or that and one day I'm going to......" O, the things we intend to do-- just not today!

The words of James should echo through our minds, "You do not know what your life will be like tomorrow (James 4:14). Tomorrow the desire to do what we intend to do may be gone. Tomorrow may see us incapable or we may simply forget. Tomorrow could find us dead (Eccl 9:10). In this hour I suggest to you that there are two things certain about this life, namely, that life itself is full of uncertainty and the day is coming in which we will die ( Heb.9:27; Acts 17:30-31). The moment we take our last breath, the moment our heart beats for the last time will mark the end of all opportunity for us to do that which we intend to do.

I leave you with these words: :Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit" (Luke 12:35 NASB).
