Recording of the sermon from May 31, 2026.
Matthew 13:45-46; The merchant who sought pearls and paid the ultimate price for the pearl he found.

The Lord is the seeker. Throughout the Bible it is clear that the Lord seeks out His people. Jesus said that He came to seek and to save .

In this parable in Matthew 13, the seeker (merchant) is Jesus. The pearl is His people. The great price is the servitude Christ gave Himself up to in order to purchase His people.

A comment from Spurgeon on Matthew 13:44:

Still the theme is “the kingdom of heaven.” The man lighted upon hid treasure, perhaps while he was ploughing or digging. He was not looking for it, yet he found it.
Is it not written, “I am found of them that sought me not”? To obtain a right to the treasure-trove, the finder must buy the field and to do this he parts with “all that he
hath.” So do men act when they discover the riches of the Gospel.

*** So did Jesus himself, at the utmost cost, buy the world to gain His Church, which was the treasure
which He desired. ***

The special application of the parable we leave to the reader.
Practically he will do well to become the chief actor in a similar incident. Gladly may he part with all that he has to make sure of the kingdom of heaven. ( Charles Haddon Spurgeon)

We continue through the Gospel of Matthew tomorrow.
We’ll be in Matthew 13:44. The parable of the man who buys the field to redeem the treasure.

How many sermons /lessons have you heard/read that the pastor/teacher/author makes the main character to be you? The point is you? Something Like David and Goliath…and the “application” goes like : God will give you the tools you need to defeat the giants in your life. So be a David, and defeat your Goliath.
Well, that’s just not the point of David and Goliath. David is the anointed future king of Israel, who faces and defeats the oppression & oppressor of God’s people. What we should see in David and Goliath is a picture of The Lord Jesus Christ defeating the enemy on behalf of a whole nation. The “you” in that story are the oppressed people who were scared and unable to defeat the enemy.

Now, Matthew 13:44…the man in the parable isn’t *you* either. The man pays the redemption price…I wonder WHO in Biblical Christianity could be the One who redeems a treasured possession???
