9/5/26| In Joseph: The Story Begins, Pastor Eric Bates teaches from Genesis 37:1–3 and introduces the opening chapter of Joseph’s remarkable journey.
Joseph begins his story as a seventeen-year-old living within a complicated family. His father Jacob loves him deeply and gives him a special coat, setting Joseph apart from his brothers and adding another layer to the tensions already present in the household.
What begins with family relationships and favoritism will soon develop into jealousy, betrayal, suffering, and unexpected turns. Yet even at the beginning, God is quietly preparing a much larger story.
This message reminds us that God can work through imperfect families and difficult beginnings. Our circumstances may influence our journey, but they do not have the final word. As Joseph’s story unfolds, we will see that God’s faithfulness can transform even the most painful chapters into part of His redemptive purpose.
Memory Verse — Genesis 37:1–3 KJV
“And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan. These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.”
