You can tell a lot about a person by how he spends his time and how he lives his life. You can tell what he thinks is important, what he thinks matters. You can evaluate your own hearts and consider how the way you spend your time and live your life reveals what you think matters most. But most importantly, if we claim to be followers of Jesus Christ, we must look at the life of our Lord Himself to see what was most important to Him and learn what ought to be most important to us.

This miracle is part of a series of miracles that demonstrate Jesus’ authority in heaven and on earth, over the spiritual realm and the physical world. And all of this for the purpose of confirming the truth of what Jesus was preaching. Jesus did not do miracles just to do them, or just to impress the crowds; He did them to demonstrate that what He preached was the Word from God, that it was true, trustworthy, powerful, life changing, and authoritative. At the Word of God the sick are made well; at the Word of God the blind receive their sight; at the Word of God the dead are brought to life; at the Word of God Satan and his demons tremble in fear; at the Word of God sinners are saved and changed. Jesus is that Word, and Jesus preached that Word.

If we look at this text as merely addressing the questions of who Jesus is and what He came to do, we will miss the heart of the matter. This text not only tells us who Jesus is and what He came to do, it also tells us for whom He came to do it—and this is the part that gets to the heart of each one of us.

It is a testimony of one whose life is centered on God and who knows God’s blessing because of it. The testimony of this psalm should be the testimony of every one of us, and it can be, even in the worst of circumstances.
