Good Friday: Jesus was crucified around 9:00 am, "the third hour" according to Mark (though John seems to differ on the chronology). He then hung on the cross about six hours before he gave up the ghost at the ninth hour (Matthew 27). During that time he experienced again the agonies of Gethsemane, atoning for the sins of all humanity who will follow him in faith.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16
"For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; but if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit—and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink—nevertheless, glory be to the Father, and I partook and finished my preparations unto the children of men." D&C 19:16-19
This statue of the crucifixion is from St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

Some Christian faiths have a special name for Thursday of Holy Week: Maundy Thursday. "Maundy" comes from the Latin word for command or mandate, so in this case it refers to Jesus's great commandment given on this day: "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." John 13:34

How to choose just one point to highlight from Thursday of Holy Week? The last supper, the betrayal, Jesus washing his disciples' feet, Gethsemane, the mock trials, Peter's denial... It was the day everything accelerated to what seemed like disaster on Friday. To the disciples, I'm sure it felt like everything was out of control.
I've felt like my life is out of control before, and it's one of my last favorite feelings. I find peace in those moments if I can remember to trust God and His story for my life, and then turn my thoughts outward to others. Sounds a lot like what Jesus did that day.

What could you do today to help the poor and socially outcast? On Wednesday of Holy Week, Jesus ate at the home of Simon the l***r, in Bethany. During that meal, “there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious, and she brake the box, and poured it on His head” (See Mark 14). Jesus reminded those who condemned the perceived waste that we always have the poor with us, and that she had done a good thing in anointing him for his burial.

On Tuesday of Holy Week, as at other times, Jesus condemned the scribes and Pharisees as hypocrites. Marty Solomon points out that the original Greek for hypocrite doesn't exclusively mean someone who says one thing and does another, the way we use it today. It simply means "actor". To do anything for the show of it is what Jesus condemned, whether your words match your deeds or not. A person can both say and do the "right" things and still be a hypocrite if they're doing it for the wrong reasons in their heart.

On Monday of holy week, Jesus cleansed the temple, driving out those who had made his Father's house a "den of thieves" (Matt. 21:12-16).
Consider today whether you have let your faith accrue a focus on wealth, prosperity, and status in place of a focus on God.

Today is Palm Sunday when we celebrate Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey. The people waved palm fronds and shouted, "Save us!" They begged him to be their king and deliver them from the Roman occupiers. At this point most of them were excited about Jesus.
Less than a week later he was dead, and many of them were probably disappointed and confused. "Wasn't he supposed to come and fix all our problems?" they probably wondered.
Many of us follow the same pattern in our conversion. When we first accept Jesus, we are excited because we have felt a change and believe he will save us. But then we can get disappointed and confused when he doesn't make all our problems go away.
President Camille N. Johnson spoke about this at General Conference in April 2025. She reminded us that we can be whole as we wait to be completely healed and delivered in God's time.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated 40,000 pounds of food to MANNA FoodBank yesterday morning.
In conjunction with America's 250th birthday this year, The Church of Jesus Christ is partnering with America250 to distribute 250 such trucks of shelf-stable food to food banks in all 50 states.
Local members of the Church will volunteer at MANNA's food distribution partners throughout the region in coming weeks to help distribute food to their neighbors in need, as taught and demonstrated by Jesus Christ. In WNC and across America, this is how we do things: neighbors take care of each other!
Thanks to regional directors from the offices of Sen. Ted Budd (R-NC) and Sen. Thom Tillis (D-NC), who were in attendance at a ceremony to welcome the truck, as well as Jamie Matthews, Assistant to the City Manager for the City of Asheville; Kiera Bulan, Interim Sustainability Director for the City of Asheville; and Glenn Stach, chair of America250’s Buncombe County level committee, who also served on the national commission to develop the America250 celebration nearly a decade ago.
