Have you ever watched a movie that was a “redemption story” where the main character has some how fallen into some kind of state of despair (caused by their own actions, circumstances, or the schemes of the villain) and has to somehow find the strength within themself to overcome their challenges and essentially free themselves from whatever is holding them down (self inflicted or otherwise) in order to rise up and become the hero of the story. We watch as they find a way to redeem themselves.
This is actually not what redemption is. Redemption is when something or someone is being held captive, is unable to free themselves, and is ransomed (purchased back) by another party.
If you are feeling held captive by fear, doubt, anxiety, circumstances, your own actions, or a habit of doing the wrong thing in the face of the right thing, you’re not alone. If we are honest, we all find ourselves in this state; captives in need of redemption. There is something in your life that you can’t shake and you know it. The good news is that Jesus has paid the ransom with his life. Sin separates us from God and makes us captives but Jesus redeems us (those who trust in him) to a better life by restoring fellowship with God. “Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” -Acts 2:21
