As America approaches its 250th birthday I thought this post was very fitting. Many of Martha's descendants are still living right here in the Cedar Square, Randleman and Level Cross areas. We will probably never know how many families and individuals she really helped during the Revolutionary War.
Martha "Mattie" McFarlane married Col. John McGee (d. 1773)around 1759. He was a prosperous land owner and merchant, a widower with two children: Samuel McGee (c.1752-1810) and Ann "Nancy" McGee (1753/4-1832, Mrs. Robert Lindsay). There were five children born to the marriage of Martha and John: Jane McGee (1760-1835, Mrs. John Welborn), Susannah McGee (1761-1843, Mrs. Elisha Mendenhall), Rev. John McGee (1763-1836), Rev. William McGee (1768-1817) and Andrew McGee (d. 1819).

After John McGee's death, Martha married William Bell, who was the first sheriff of Randolph County, NC, a justice of the county, and later served in the NC General Assembly. There were no children born to this marriage. Martha was a midwife, and often traveled about the countryside to see to the birth of children, and also to care for those who were ill. She was a devoted Presbyterian, and converted her first husband from the Church of England to the Presbyterian Church, and persuaded him to leave some property to the Church. She was a fiery patriot....and made something of a name for herself as a spy during the Revolution

A past post, keeping our history alive!!

Isabelle Coltrane Marsh was born August 31 1853. She was the daughter of Kelly Coltrane and Mary Gossett Coltrane. She was raised on the banks of Deep River on the Randolph and Guilford County line along with her siblings:
Daniel Branson Coltrane, Dr. Thomas Wesley Coltrane, Abigail Coltrane Johnson, Roella "Rollie" Virginia Coltrane Murrow, Sarah Gazelle Coltrane, Kelly Gordon Coltrane.
Early in life she knew the importance of a Christ centered life. She was raised in Ebenezer and frequently went to services with her Grandmother Sophia McGee Coltrane at Centre Friends Meeting. She was only 5 years old when her father passed away. Her grandmother made sure that she "studied her lessons" from school. School wasn't so easy to get to, having to cross Deep River and not to get wet before making it to Centre school. Isabelle married Isaac Leonard Marsh September 25, 1869. They had 3 children : Rev. Victor Leonard Marsh, Charlie Virgil Marsh, and Louise "Lula" Marsh Cooper. In 1938 the Greensboro paper wrote a story of "2 sister in their 80's" featuring Isabelle and her sister Rollie Murrow, in the interview they talked about walking to school in the 1850's and 60's. And how blessed they had both been. Later in 1939 the sisters photo was in the Greensboro paper yet again, both wearing old fashioned bonnets going to a meeting at Centre Friends Meeting!! Isabelle finalized her will on August 17, 1941, after being ill for a time, she passed away on December 1, 1941 and was buried beside Isaac at Ebenezer. For 88 years she not only talked about Godliness to her family, but she tried to lived it!
