On Monday, May 19, in San Diego, two armed teenagers attacked the Islamic School of the Islamic Center of San Diego. Thanks be to God, children and teachers remained safe, but three members of the community were murdered, and it appears that the attackers died of su***de.

Our first response to this tragedy must be horror and grief on all sides: mourning for the tragic loss and inexcusable escalation of fear in the U.S. Muslim community, already burdened by Islamophobia. But also, mourning for a culture in which violence is idolized, and young adults turn to hatred of their neighbors.

Many of our United Church of Christ congregations in San Diego have longstanding partnerships with the ICSD, include regular visits with youth groups and a history of community organizing with ICSD leaders, especially Imam Taha Hassane. From across the Southern California Nevada Conference: we stand with our Muslim neighbors; and we grieve with your community. There is no excuse for violence.
Today at 2:00 p.m., a press conference will be held at the Islamic Center of Los Angeles. Whether you join in person or in spirit, this afternoon or this evening, from San Diego to Paso Robles and from Long Beach to Las Vegas, let us unite our hearts and prayers for peace as we call on the One God with Many Names who invites us to imagine and co-create a beloved community where are all free from violence and oppression. Let us condemn hatred and violence in any form against our neighbors, and vigilantly advocate for freedom of religious expression.

A fund has been created by ICSD to provide direct assistance and recovery to those affected by the shootings (link in comments).

There is still time to register for our Annual Gathering, where we are grateful to welcome guest presenter Nina Fernando of Shoulder to Shoulder for an opportunity to learn about the wider context of anti-Muslim discrimination in our communities and how we can build safer, more peaceable partnerships together.

The Rise of Far Right Nationalism | June 6 1:30PM

Moral injury is profound psychological and spiritual distress caused by actions—or failures to act—that violate one’s deepest moral beliefs. This “moral wound” can manifest as guilt, shame, anger, anxiety, or betrayal. This presentation will explore how moral injury fuels American fascism, particularly within white Christian nationalism, and will examine its impact on democracy and the global rise of authoritarian movements. It will also consider how people of faith can endure the coming decade by cultivating forms of belief not rooted in moral injury.

We welcome Rita Nakashima Brock, RelM, MA, PhD, a pioneering theologian and the first Asian American woman to earn a doctorate in philosophy of religion. This discussion will be held on June 6 at 1:30PM at Church of the Foohills, 6279 Foothill Road, Ventura, CA. All are welcome.

I'd Rather Be Dead Than Silent Screening | May 2 7:15-10:00PM

After 9/11, fear and Islamophobia spikes in America. Into this storm steps Professor Khaled Abou El Fadl - Islamic jurist and human rights advocate. His refusal to stay silent makes him a lightning rod: vilified, threatened, and nearly killed for his words. Surrounded by a private library of half a million books - some banned for centuries - Khaled fights for an Islam rooted in pluralism, democracy, and justice. At his side is Grace Song, his wife and partner, who shares in the danger and the defiance.

The film will be followed by a short panel discussion moderated by Nina Fernando, Executive Director of The Shoulder To Shoulder Campaign. The panel will also include Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl (now Distinguished Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law); Grace Song; Emily Rose Debinie, Palestinian Christian artist and activist, and Tina Mascara, Director. Light refreshments and prayer space available 7:15-8:00 pm
