Catholic trivia for the day: Which everyday phrase comes from today’s Gospel?

A) Bite the bullet
B) Go the extra mile
C) Break the ice
D) Silver lining

Jesus says in Matthew 5:41, “Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles.”

A phrase we still use today began in the Sermon on the Mount.
That’s your Catholic trivia for the day... use it recklessly at dinner!

“The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few.” (Matthew 9:37)

As an Army chaplain during the Korean War, Venerable Emil Kapaun brought the sacraments to soldiers, cared for the wounded and served fellow prisoners after his capture.

His witness still speaks clearly: the Church needs laborers willing to go where mercy is needed most.

On the Army’s birthday, we pray for soldiers, veterans, chaplains and all who serve under the weight of duty.

Venerable Emil Kapaun, pray for us.

📖 Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today's Gospel (Luke 2:51) ends with one of the quietest lines in all of Scripture: "His mother kept all these things in her heart."

Mary and Joseph had just spent three days in anguish searching for the twelve-year-old Jesus. When they found him in the Temple, his answer made no immediate sense to them. Luke notes plainly that they did not understand what he said to them.

And yet... Mary kept all these things in her heart.

The day after the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we honor the Immaculate Heart of Mary because her heart was formed entirely by love for Him.

Pope Pius XII opened his great encyclical on the Sacred Heart with Isaiah’s words: “You shall draw waters with joy out of the Savior’s fountain.”

That is a beautiful way to understand today’s Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O most holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I adore you, I love you, and with a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer you this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, pure, and wholly obedient to your will. Grant, Good Jesus, that I may live in you and for you. Protect me in the midst of danger; comfort me in my afflictions; give me health of body, assistance in my temporal needs, your blessing on all that I do, and the grace of a holy death. Amen.

The Heart of Jesus is a fountain of mercy, grace, and life for the Church. Catholics come to that Heart with trust because everything we need for salvation flows from Christ.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.

✝️ Did you know the word "Christian" was first used because of St. Barnabas?

Today the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Barnabas, Apostle. When he brought Saul of Tarsus to Antioch and the two spent a year teaching, it was in that community and momen that the followers of Jesus were first called "Christians."

💡 "The light of faith is unique: it is capable of illuminating every pathway of human existence." ~Pope Francis (Lumen Fidei)

Today's Gospel reminds us that our mission is to be light-bearers. The light we shine is a reflection of Christ burning inside us.

"This is the Fisherman who came down to catch the lives of the lost."

~St. Ephrem

Today the Church honors Saint Ephrem, a 4th-century deacon, poet, and Doctor of the Church known historically as "The Harp of the Holy Spirit." During a time when complex theological debates were fracturing the early Church, Ephrem realized that ordinary people learned and remembered doctrine through what they sang. He spent his life composing hundreds of beautiful hymns, poems, and sacred music to teach the true Catholic faith and bring his flock into a closer, deeply personal encounter with Christ.

Today, the Gospel takes us straight to the side of a mountain to hear the most famous sermon ever preached: The Beatitudes. esus looks at the people the world overlooks...the mourning, the poor in spirit, the peacemakers, the meek... and calls them blessed.

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ | June 7

At the end of the Bread of Life discourse, recorded in John 6, many of Jesus' disciples walked away. Not enemies, not Pharisees... but disciples. The people who had been following him.

They weren't confused. The Greek text is precise: where Jesus had previously used the ordinary word for eating, he switched at the critical moment to trōgō...to gnaw or to chew, the verb used for animals at feed.

The USCCB's own footnote on the passage acknowledges the shift directly. His listeners grasped what he was saying. That was the problem.

He did not call them back. He turned to the Twelve and asked: Do you also want to leave?
