Saint Lorenzo Ruiz Life Story

Saint Lorenzo Ruiz is the
first Filipino venerated in
the Roman Catholic
Church. Of ChineseFilipino parentage, he became the country’s protomartyr after his ex*****on
by the Tokugawa Shogunate during its persecution
of Japanese Christians in
the 17th century. Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Binondo,
Manila, to a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, both
Catholic. Needless to say, he learned the Chinese language from his father, while his mother taught him Tagalog. At a young age, Lorenzo served as an altar boy
at the Binondo Church. He studied under the Dominican
friars. After a few years, Ruiz earned the title of calligrapher because of his skillful penmanship. He became a
member of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary.
He married Rosario and they had two sons and a
daughter. The Ruiz family led a generally peaceful, religious and comfortable life. However, while working as a
clerk for the Binondo Church, Ruiz was falsely accused
of killing a Spaniard. Thereby, he sought asylum on
board a ship with the help of three Dominican priests.
Lorenzo and some of his friends left for Okinawa on
June 10, 1636, with the aid of the Dominican fathers.
Upon arrival in Japan, the missionaries were arrested
and thrown into prison. After two years, they were transferred to Nagasaki to face trial by torture. uiz and his
companions faced different types of torture. On September 27, 1637, he and his companions were taken to the
Nishizaka Hill, where they were tortured, and hung upside down. The method was supposed to be extremely
painful, as victims were bound, with one hand always
left free so that they may signal their desire to recant,
that would lead to their release.
Ruiz refused to renounce Christianity and died from
blood loss and suffocation. His body was cremated, with
the ashes thrown into the sea. It was the first beatification ceremony to be held outside the Vatican in history.
St. Lorenzo Ruiz was canonized by the same pope in
the Vatican on October 18, 1987, making him the first
Filipino saint. His canonization was based on a miracle
that took place in 1983, when Cecilia Alegria Policarpio,
a two-year old girl suffering from in-born brain atrophy
was cured after her family and supporters prayed to
Ruiz for his intercession. In Chicago, St. Lorenzo Ruiz is
enshrined at Old St. Mary’s Church.

Compassionate Christ, Compassionate People: Music, Spirituality, and the Liturgy
What a calling! Your music ministry helps the worshiping community to be the body of Christ in our broken world. Not all on its own, mind you, but because your music serves the liturgy. Every moment of the Mass—from the gathering rite to dismissal—calls us to have our being in Christ and bear his compassion to others. Come explore with Bob the liturgy's spirituality and how music serves it.
Bob Hurd has served as a teacher, composer and liturgist in various pastoral and academic settings, including the Franciscan School of Theology, St. Patrick’s Seminary, and the Graduate Pastoral Ministries Program of Santa Clara University.
His widely used liturgical music is published by OCP and is featured in numerous hymnals in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. In 2005 he received the Good and Faithful Servant award of the Southwest Liturgical Conference and in 2010 the NPM’s Pastoral Musician of the Year award. In 2020, his book, Compassionate Christ, Compassionate People: Liturgical Foundations of Christian Spirituality was awarded First Place by both the Association of Catholic Publishers and the Catholic Press Association of the United States

A Message from Msgr. Timothy O’Connell

As I leave to enter a new phase of my retirement at St.
John of God Retirement Center in Los Angeles, I wish to
take this opportunity to thank you for all your kindness, cooperation, and support during my seven years here at Annunciation Parish. You are a very, very dedicated community of faith in the Lord Jesus and His Holy Mother. You
are dedicated to the parish liturgies, Feast days, parish
ministries, and your devotion to the poor.
I wish to thank you for your farewell notes, gifts, the special
dinner, and your prayers. I wish to extend a special thanks
to the Bereavement committee members for their help and
presence at funerals. A special thank you to the parish
staff and all their help and support. I wish to thank my
brother priests --Fr. Freddie, Fr. Eugene, and Bishop Brian
for their friendship and companionship.
I leave you with the advice of St. Augustine: “I leave the
past to God’s mercy, the present to His love, and the future
to His providence.”
