Luke 5:10: Jesus would teach Simon to tell people about love and salvation through Christ. By doing this, he would help to catch people from the trap of sin.

Jesus and a large group of followers arrive at a lake where Simon and his friends have come to shore with nothing after a long night of fishing. Jesus asks Simon to take him out on the lake in his boat so He can teach the crowd of people. After Jesus finishes teaching, He tells Simon to cast his nets again. Simon and his friends catch so many fish that it almost breaks their nets and sinks the two boats needed to haul in their catch. Jesus tells Simon that he will be fishing for people from now on. Simon and his friends bring in their boats and leave everything behind to follow Jesus. Simon obeyed Jesus twice in this story. First, when he took Jesus out onto the lake in his boat, and second, when he cast his nets, even though he had caught nothing all night. When Simon saw what was going on with the fish, he immediately knew that he was witnessing a miracle. The man in his boat was a holy man, and Simon didn’t think he was worthy to be in His presence. He didn’t want his sin to hurt Jesus’s reputation, so he told Jesus to go away because he was a sinful man – but Jesus already knew that and didn’t care. He saw Simon for who he could be and how he could help others, not for all the wrong that he had done in his life. Once Simon understood what Jesus was offering him, there was nothing worth staying behind in his old life for. He heard Jesus call him, and he followed.

Before many of the disciples began following Jesus, they were fishermen. To catch fish, they used bait. Jesus asked these men, who would become His disciples, if they would like to learn to become fishers of men. The Gospel is the bait that would help these and all future disciples to catch the hearts and souls of people.

Jesus called a special group of followers to accompany Him on His three-year mission. These were just ordinary people. Jesus didn't just call them to help Him; He called them to befriend them, teach them, and help them fulfill the great work of proclaiming the good news to the ends of the earth once He left (Acts 1:8). The word disciple means follower. But it wasn’t as simple as following Jesus around for His disciples. They weren’t just Jesus’ helpers or servants, they followed Him to observe and learn everything they could from Him.All disciples are Christians, but not all Christians are disciples. Being a disciple is a big commitment that requires us to give our undivided attention to God. The goals of discipleship are to mature in our faith, become more like Jesus, and create new disciples of Christ.

After John the Baptist baptized Him, the Holy Spirit led Jesus to spend 40 days in the wilderness to fast. While He was in the desert, Satan came and tempted Him three times: once to make food for himself, a second time to test whether God would let Him be hurt, and a third and final time to gain power over the world. Jesus resisted each temptation by reciting Scripture.

John the Baptist had dedicated his life to preparing people for the Messiah, and in this moment, he sees Him approach. The people who heard him call Jesus the Lamb of God would have understood his meaning: Jesus was the pure and sinless sacrifice that would wash us all from sin.

John the Baptist was the first prophet sent by God since Malachi, who lived about 400 years earlier. Jesus once said of him, “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11). John the Baptist was a man of single-minded, fearless, and steadfast faith. God gave John a mission—to prepare the way for Jesus. He lived a simple life focused only on preparing people to meet their Savior.
John’s calling was to tell everyone, including the religious leaders and the king, that they needed to repent. He called people out on their sins without regard for people’s position or his own life. The importance of his message outweighed any concerns he may have had for his life. With his whole heart, John believed in the Messiah and that He was coming. He preached about the coming of the Messiah regardless of whether or not people were receptive to the message. Jesus came to John the Baptist and asked to be baptized. John baptized Jesus to reveal Jesus’ identity as the Messiah and that His ministry could begin.

In this story, twelve years have passed since Jesus was born; these years were filled with growing as other boys grew, playing as other boys played, and learning the Scriptures and his earthly father’s trade, as other boys were accustomed to doing in those days. It was not uncommon for the family to take the long pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the Passover to celebrate God’s deliverance; but this Passover was different. On the way home from the celebration, Mary and Joseph did not find their beloved son where they expected to find Him. He was not with the family making the journey back to Nazareth. After days of searching, they finally found him in the temple, where he was calmly examining Scriptures with esteemed teachers of the law. Jesus’ reply to His distressed mother contained an element of revelation that Mary and Joseph could not completely comprehend: “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” This statement contains the first clue in recorded Scripture where the boy, Jesus, announces who He really is. He is the beloved Son of God. This particular Passover celebration of God’s deliverance had quietly revealed the Deliverer.
