What is Faith?

"Faith is not belief, an assent to a proposition; faith is attachment to transcendence, to the meaning beyond the mystery."

"Forfeit your sense of awe, let your conceit diminish your ability to revere, and the universe becomes a market place for you. The loss of awe is the avoidance of insight. A return to reverence is the first prerequisite for a revival of wisdom, for the discovery of the world as an allusion to God." R. Rohr

Carlos reflection...

Faith is not mere adherence to doctrines or principles. Our rationalistic approach to Christianity has led us to believe that faith is a banner we raise to declare and defend the intellectual or ideological positions we have inherited. But faith is far deeper than that. Faith is the inner conviction of the soul that assures us we are connected to the Mystery of Life, that we belong, that our true home rests in the bosom of the Divine.

Many of us have never experienced this kind of faith, or perhaps we have lost it along the way. Our current socio-political culture has little understanding of faith in this deeper sense. We have lost the capacity for awe, the reverent awareness that allows us to recognize the sacredness of every human being and of all creation. When awe disappears, both people and nature become disposable; life turns simply into economic transactions.

If we are to be truly faithful, we must recover—or discover anew—this sense of sacredness and cultivate a renewed awe for everything God has created.
