White Oak Campground

White Oak Campground Whiteoak Campground Whiteoak Campground was established in 1820 for the purpose of Methodist campmeetings. Gatherers have worshiped here for over 200 years.

Francis Asbury, during his travels through Georgia in 1820, is said to have preached at Whiteoak to a crowd of more than 8,000 people thus establishing the campmeeting tradition at Whiteoak. Summer campmeeting at Whiteoak is held the last full week in June each year, featuring an 11 a.m. service with a local preacher and a 7:30 p.m. evening service with a visiting preacher. Special music is prov

ided during each service by guest song leaders and area church choirs. Whiteoak also holds a three-day fall campmeeting during the second weekend in October. These long weekend fall campmeetings include a Friday night service, Saturday morning and evening service, as well as a Sunday morning worship service. The campground also features a swimming pool, playground, and nature trail for visitors to enjoy. This relaxing country atmosphere welcomes campers all year long. On this date, 235 years ago, (March 2, 1791) John Wesley died at his home iin London, where he lived next door to his chapel on City Road. According to tradition, his final words were, "The best of all is, God is with us".

This artistic rendering of Wesley's deathbed, a hand-colored lithograph titled "The Death of the Revd. John Wesley, A.M," was produced by Magee's Lithograph Press in Philadelphia. Another version was published by Selig Lipschitz in London in 1870.

Following Wesley's death, prints like this were produced decades later to commemorate his life and faith, often taking artistic liberties with details, such as the room's dimensions.

The image here is a photograph of the lithograph currently on display in the museum at John Street United Methodist Church.
