Today, February 9th, is a sad, but proud day on our Asatru calendar. It is the day we honor one of our martyrs, Eyvind Kinnrifi, who was tortured and killed for no other reason than his love and loyalty to the old Scandinavian and Germanic Gods and Goddesses, and refused to be baptized, and convert to Christianity.
On this day we honor Eyvind Kinnrifi, who was captured, tied to a table, and tortured to death in a most horrible way. A brazier filled with red - hot coals was placed on his stomach until his body, it is said, literally burst open. This act of sadistic torture was perpetrated by that evil Christian King Olaf, who deemed all Pagans as fair game for torture and death if they would not convert.
There is no greater act of love and loyalty than to give the ultimate sacrifice for something that you have total faith in. Eyvind gave his all for the Gods and Goddesses, his ancestors and his folk. That is the "Tru" person that Eyvind Kinnrifi was, and that is why we honor him, and all those who laughed in the face of death to honor their faith and their folk. These martyred men and women showed a level of bravery that many could not attain a thousand years ago. Most simply gave in and switched religions, which is why they have been long forgotten, but some, like Eyvind will be remembered forever in our hearts, and in our prayers to the old Gods.
Cattle die and kinsmen die,
thyself eke soon will die;
but fair fame will fade never,
I ween for him who wins it!
- Havamal
"For your bravery, loyalty, and love of our ancient Gods and Goddesses, we honor you here this day, as you honored all of us a millenium ago. For your ultimate sacrifice we will remember you, and honor you always. May you forever sit on the hallowed benches in the great halls of Valhalla!
Hail to our martyrs!
All Hail Eyvind Kinnrifi!
