This Sunday is Holy Trinity Sunday — and we're exploring what it means that God is not a solitary, isolated force, but an unending exchange of self-giving love between Parent, Son, and Holy Spirit. And what it means that this same God sends us out into a world being pulled apart by division. Today we pause to remember those who gave their lives in service to this country. We hold their names — and the families who carry their absence — in our prayers. Remembrance is holy work. To say someone’s name, to refuse to let them be forgotten, is a sacred act. Today we do that for the fallen, and we pray for a world where fewer families must grieve this way. May their memory be a blessing. May we be worthy of the peace they fought for.

Today about 30 volunteers from across the community came together to begin preparing garden plots to be farmed by Hmong farmers in our community. We completed three plots that will be planted in the coming days. This new ministry is just starting and we will be continuing to prepare more plots over the coming days and weeks. Thank you to New Hmong, Multicultural Coalition, Inc., Partnership Community Health Center, and East Central Synod of Wisconsin - ELCA for your partnership and accompaniment in this new venture turning our unused land into something new.

This Sunday we celebrate the birthday of the church — the day the Holy Spirit showed up like a rushing wind and did something remarkable: spoke to people from every nation under heaven, in their own language. Not one language. Not the "right" language. Their own. This Sunday at Zion, we're sitting with a question that feels pretty timely: What are we afraid of? Wear red if you've got it. Our Presiding Bishop Curry shares a response to the tragedy in San Diego earlier this week.

Presiding Bishop Yehiel Curry has released a statement on the shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

“As the ELCA, we must speak plainly: violence rooted in hatred is sin. We condemn Islamophobia and acknowledge its rise in recent years. Our church affirms that “anti-Muslim hatred is antithetical to our Christian faith” (A Declaration of the ELCA to the Muslim Community), for we are called to love our neighbor in ways that cast out fear (1 John 4:18).”

Have you ever walked into a room and realized something was already underway? That's kind of what happens when you read from our John 17, our Gospel for this Sunday. Jesus is praying — and it turns out, that prayer never ended.

This Sunday is Confirmation Sunday at Zion, and we will reflect on what it means to stumble into the middle of something bigger than you expected. A grace that doesn't wait for you to be ready. A love that was already going when you walked in.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day — and our Gospel text has something to say about that. In John 14, Jesus promises his disciples that they will not be left alone. Another Advocate is coming. And then he says: “I will not leave you orphaned.” This week we are reading from the Inclusive Bible — a translation that recovers something ancient about the Spirit’s identity. She has always been present, always been at work, always been near. We are simply learning, again, to recognize her. Whether Mother’s Day is a day of joy, grief, or something in between — you are welcome at Zion this Sunday at 9:00 a.m. The one who does not leave us orphaned makes room for all of it.
