I used to have a little card on display in my office that said: “God's original plan was to hang out in a garden with some naked vegetarians.” I’m not sure that statement has any direct connection to my sermon, but maybe it got your attention, at least! Now to the sermon: According to the Genesis 1 creation story, Adam’s first work assignment—to “take care of” the Garden of Eden—came from God. When Adam and Eve caused things to “go south,” as we say, God told Adam that sweat-producing work was going to be the ongoing lot of humanity. As God predicted, work has been a major component of life ever since.

In our music, Sam Johnson will be our pianist and lead our congregational singing during our praise and worship time, assisted by Pamela Callwood, who will also favor us with a couple of vocal solos.

Our sermon series “Women of the Bible—The Difference They Made, The Lessons We Can Learn” will resume on September 12. Nearly 300 women or groups of women are alluded to in scripture. Some are well-known; others we don’t remember ever hearing about. Some are named, many aren’t. Some were paragons of virtue: a few were unmitigatedly evil. But all were important in some way. And in that way we can learn valuable lessons from them.

September 12. Fellowship Meal in the church hall following the service. The meal will have a Summer Picnic theme. Watch and listen for more details.

Saturday Sermon: “Working for God—Whoever Your Employer Is.”

As God predicted, work has been a major component of life ever since.

If you’re in Central Florida and looking for a place to worship this Saturday, September 5, come to Graceworx Community Church (9913 Bear Lake Road, Apopka, FL 32703) at 11:30 am, where my sermon will address a topic appropriate for Labor Day weekend: work. Among other assertions, I will argue that whoever our immediate employer is, we should always work as if we’re working for God. When we do so, we may find it actually works greatly to our advantage.

In our music on September 5, Sam Johnson will be our pianist and lead our congregational singing during our praise and worship time, assisted by Pamela Callwood, who will also favor us with a couple of vocal solos.

Our Adult Bible Study on September 5 will be the third session in a five-week series titled “The Narrow Path,” created by pastor and author Rich Villodas. Millie Preussner will moderate this week’s discussion. Our hour-long Bible study is held each Saturday at 10:00 am in the church boardroom. Everyone is welcome.

When you think of a royal family tree, you usually think of pristine, perfect lineages. But Matthew made sure to include Bathsheba in the genealogy of Jesus. Trading Your Fear for His Future

Let’s be honest: thinking about tomorrow can sometimes feel overwhelming. 😟 We look at our bank accounts, read the headlines, or wait for medical results, and anxiety starts to tighten its grip on our hearts. That fear loves to rob us of the peace God wants us to enjoy today.

But right in the middle of our worries, God whispers a profound, world-changing promise. It's the same message He gave His people long ago when they felt hopeless. He says: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Think about that. You don't have to stay up late trying to solve every problem or predict every outcome. You don't need to control tomorrow when you trust the One who already holds it. 🤲 His plans aren't designed to crush you; they are crafted to give you a future blooming with hope. Today, you can take a deep breath and rest in His perfect wisdom and fierce love for you.

Prayer for Today:Heavenly Father, when my heart feels anxious and my mind starts to spin, pull me back to Your promises. Thank You that my future is secure in Your hands. I trade my worries for Your peace and my fear for Your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🙏

We are so excited to highlight an incredible organization we partner with: Ourganda! Founder Ron Gladden is taking us on a journey to Bundibugyo in Western Uganda, a region where families face unimaginable hardships like extreme poverty and domestic violence.

Ourganda exists to solve problems that many call "unsolvable" by working alongside villages to create lasting change from within. Because of their dedicated teams, thousands of families are now free from violence, and entire communities are being transformed!

Pastor Jim reminds us of an amazing truth this week: Jesus's mission isn't just for the perfect or the privileged. By looking at the genealogy of the Messiah, we see that His love is for sinners, gentiles, slaves, and absolutely everybody. Jesus came for you. Sometimes, securing fairness means we can't afford to be quiet! 🗣️ Pastor Jim reminds us that demanding equality and justice for the disadvantaged is a responsibility we all share—even if it means raising our voices or standing up to the status quo. ✊ When we see inequality, we are called to act and make sure fairness prevails across the board. Saturday Sermon: “Four Disreputable Grandmas and Jesus.”

Years ago I wrote for a religious magazine an opinion piece titled: “Those Boring Parts of the Bible.” High on my boring scale were all the “begats”—a King James Version term used repeatedly in the Bible’s genealogies. My opinion piece wasn’t a denunciation of genealogies. Rather, I argued that there are at times spiritually significant facts to be found in such unlikely places—if one simply takes the time to do a bit of digging, that is.
