Saturday Sermon: “The Impact of One Man’s Twisted View of God.”

All spiritual/moral/ethical obligations are important. None of them should be carelessly brushed aside. But not all spiritual/moral/ethical obligations should be given equal weight. Some are more important than others. Much more important. At times, two or more obligations may be in conflict, requiring that some are honored and others may have to be ignored or granted secondary or tertiary status. The challenge when such a conflict arises is to decide which values will be honored and which will not.

If you’re in Central Florida and looking for a place to worship this Saturday, October 24, come to Graceworx Community Church (9913 Bear Lake Road, Apopka, FL 32703) at 11:30 am, where my sermon will look at the tragic story of a man named Jephthah, who, I will argue, got his priorities badly wrong.

Our music lineup on October 24 has Sam Johnson as our pianist. He will lead and accompany our praise and worship singing, assisted by Lianet Rodriguez, who will also bless us with a couple of vocal solos.

In Our Adult Bible Study on October 24, we’ll continue delving into Jesus’ radical spiritual teachings we call the Beatitudes. Our hour-long Bible study is held each Saturday at 10:00 am in the church boardroom. Everyone is welcome.

Livestream and archive. If you can’t be physically present for our 11:30 am worship service, you can go to Facebook or Youtube and watch the livestream. Or watch it later as an archive on either site. You’re more than welcome at Graceworx in whatever way you choose to participate.

In God's economy, sometimes the winner loses and the loser wins. ✨🙌 Despite Leah being the unloved, tolerated sister in a tragic family dynamic, God actively worked through her to bring the Messiah into the world. Pastor Jim reminds us that God isn't looking for perfect situations to fulfill His promises. He sees the overlooked and uses the broken. What if "church" was never meant to be just a place we go on Saturday, but a life we live every single day? 🚪🌾

For so many of us, it’s easy to view our faith as a Saturday routine. We walk through the doors, we join our voices in worship, and then we leave—sometimes leaving our faith comfortably contained inside those same four walls. But Jesus never intended for His love to be kept inside.

The early church in Acts didn't just meet in the temple courts. They brought their faith to the streets, breaking bread in their homes, carrying one another's burdens, and living as a community of grace every single day (Acts 2:46-47). For them, "church" wasn't an event to attend; it was a movement of everyday love. 💛

As we step out from our Saturday gathering, you and I are called to be the church beyond its walls. When you offer a kind word to a stressed coworker, help a neighbor, or step up to meet a need in your community, you are being the hands and feet of Jesus. You are bringing His light into places a church building may never reach. 🕯️✨

Many people will never step inside a church building, but they will walk beside you. Let's be the salt, the light, and the living answer to someone’s prayer. Let's turn our daily lives into a beautiful, continuous act of worship.

Let’s pray together:Lord, forgive us for the times we’ve kept Your grace to ourselves. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit to make every day an act of worship. Use our lives, our words, and our hands to show Your love in our neighborhoods, homes, and workplaces. Help us to be Your church, wherever we go. Amen. 🙏

This week's Pastor's Blog: Understand History of Winners and Losers on Columbus Day

Life often divides us into categories. And one common demarcation is “winner” and “loser.”

Whether competing in sports, applying for a job or seeking admission to an academic institution, we often voluntarily choose to risk being a loser in the hope that we might be a winner. Of course, we could opt out of the competition altogether. To do so would save us from the disappointment of losing. Though, we would also forfeit the possibility of winning.

Saturday Sermon: “When the Winner Loses and the Loser Wins.”

In the 1960s a quirky pop group called Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs came up with cutesy little song titled “Oh That’s Good, No That’s Bad.” All the way through the song, the seemingly good turns out to be bad, and the seemingly bad turns out to be good. In real life, the person who seems to be the winner may actually be the loser, and the one who seems to be the loser may turn out to be the winner. And when it’s a matter of two sisters being married to the same man, the winner/loser status at any given moment can create considerable tension—both interpersonal tensions and intrapersonal tensions.

Our sermon series “Women of the Bible—The Difference They Made, The Lessons We Can Learn” will continue through the week before Thanksgiving. Nearly 300 women or groups of women are alluded to in scripture. Some are well-known; others we don’t remember ever hearing about. Some are named, many aren’t. Some were paragons of virtue: a few were unmitigatedly evil. But all were important in some way. And in that way we can learn valuable lessons from them.

It’s easy for us to say, "I don't do that, it's beneath my dignity." But as Pastor Jim Coffin beautifully explains, there was nothing beneath Christ's dignity. Even though He was in very nature God, Jesus didn't cling to His heavenly prerogatives or power. Instead, He made Himself nothing and took on the very nature of a servant to save us. When the weight of daily life feels too heavy to carry, it’s so easy to get lost in the noise. Between the endless bills, the demands of work, the worries about tomorrow, and the heavy expectations we try to meet, our eyes naturally focus downward. We scan the immediate path ahead, simply trying to survive.

But there is another way to walk.

The Apostle Paul gently but powerfully invites us to raise our gaze, to "set our minds on things above" (Colossians 3:2).

Living with our eyes on eternity isn’t about escaping reality; it’s about reframing it. We are travelers here. This world—with all its chaotic beauty and crushing burdens—is not our final destination. Our true home is still to come.

When we hold this eternal perspective, everything shifts. Our present struggles, though very real and deeply painful, begin to feel smaller in the light of the everlasting glory that awaits us. Our earthly achievements no longer feed our pride, because we know those worldly crowns will eventually fade.

True, unshakeable peace happens when we stop trying to anchor our hope in things that are slipping through our fingers and place it entirely in God’s unbreakable promise.

Letting go of our need for control allows us to forgive quicker, love more generously, and walk with a lighter heart—knowing our future is forever secure in His hands. Today, let’s choose to see this life through heaven's eyes.

Let’s Pray: Gracious God, when we are overwhelmed by the rush of this world, help us to pause and look up. Forgive us for the times we let temporary anxieties crowd out Your eternal peace. Shift our gaze, Lord. Help us to see our struggles, our successes, and our daily battles through the lens of eternity. Anchor our hope in Your promise, and remind us every day that our ultimate home is with You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Have you ever been in a situation where a tough job needed to be done, but everyone looked the other way? When the disciples gathered for Passover, they realized they forgot to hire a servant to wash their feet. Since no one wanted to play the servant role, Jesus took off His outer garment and did the work Himself. Pastor Jim reminds us that Jesus is the ultimate example of helping people, willing to do whatever needs to be done.
