Sunday Sermon Recap

Most people would say we worship when life is going well. When prayers are answered. When blessings are flowing. When breakthrough comes.

But Acts 16 paints a very different picture.

Paul and Silas had been falsely accused, beaten, imprisoned, and chained in the inner cell. Their backs were bleeding. Their future was uncertain. Yet instead of waiting for God to change their circumstances, they chose to worship while the chains were still on.

Why? Because worship is not determined by circumstances. Worship is a choice.

Their situation had changed, but God had not. The prison was real. The pain was real. The chains were real. But God was still God. Because He remained unchanging, they still had a reason to worship.

Isaiah describes praise as a garment and heaviness as a spirit. Heaviness focuses on what is wrong, what is missing, what is uncertain, and what is hurting. Praise focuses on who God is, what He has done, what He is doing, and what He has promised.

Praise does not deny reality. It simply refuses to let the problem become the center of our reality.

The Bible tells us that Paul and Silas worshipped at midnight. Not after the breakthrough. Not after the chains fell off. Not after the prison doors opened. They worshipped in the darkest part of the night.

When silence seemed reasonable, they worshipped. When worship seemed impractical, they worshipped. When their circumstances argued against it, they worshipped anyway.

Sometimes that's exactly what faith requires of us.

Worship when it feels illogical. Worship when it seems impractical. Worship when others don't understand. Worship when your circumstances argue against it. Worship anyway.

One of the greatest gifts a father can give his family is worship. Our families are watching how we respond when life gets difficult. They are learning where our trust is anchored and who truly leads our lives.

Your children may forget many things you say, but they will remember seeing you worship. They will remember seeing you trust God when it didn't make sense.

Worship doesn't make us weak. It reminds us where our strength comes from.

Sometimes worship isn't about learning something new.

Sometimes it's about remembering something you've forgotten.

There are moments in God's presence when truths you've known for years suddenly become illuminated. What was once familiar becomes fresh. What was once information becomes revelation.

That's why worship matters. It re-centers our hearts, refocuses our minds, and reminds us who God is and who we are in Him.

Sunday was such a beautiful reminder of what happens when we gather in faith, worship, and prayer.

The Holy Spirit was moving, His goodness was evident, and we are so grateful for all God is doing in and through our church family. 🤍

One difficult week can make us forget ten years of God's goodness.

One bad report can make us forget a thousand blessings.

That's why David preached to himself:

"Bless the Lord, O my soul... and forget not all His benefits."

Because the greatest threat to worship is not always rebellion.

Sometimes it's forgetfulness.

Worship is the discipline of remembering.

Remembering His faithfulness.
Remembering His mercy.
Remembering His provision.
Remembering who God has always been.

When faith remembers, worship finds its voice.

The woman at the well was focused on a mountain.

Jesus was focused on her heart.

Because worship was never supposed to be transactional. It was always meant to be relational.

You can know facts about Jesus and still miss relationship with Jesus. You can sing the right songs, attend the right church, and follow the right traditions, yet still have a heart far from God.

The Father isn't looking for polished performances.

He's looking for surrendered hearts.

He's looking for people who worship in spirit and in truth.

Sunday Sermon Recap!

What if worship is more than songs?

Paul said offering our lives to God is our "true and proper worship." In the Greek, that carries the idea of something reasonable, fitting, and appropriate.

In other words, when you understand all that God has done for you, surrender stops feeling extreme and starts feeling reasonable.

And one of the greatest threats to worship is not always sin. Sometimes it’s distraction. Because the enemy doesn’t just distract us with bad things. He distracts us with busy things. Busy people feel productive, responsible, and justified. When Martha was busy, Mary was intentional.

Worship is not accidental.

Worship is chosen.

Today we pause to remember.

Memorial Day is more than a long weekend. It is a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation and paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Their sacrifice reminds us that freedom is never free.

As we gather with family and friends, may we also take a moment to reflect and remember.

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13

From the SouthShore family to yours, we remember. We're grateful.
