Foot washing
Have you ever thought about Jesus washing the disciples' feet and did you ask yourself if you would be like Peter and not want Jesus to wash your feet? I have had my feet washed before and it is a humbling experience and it is also a time when you feel very honored by the service of another. I think about Peter and assume he did not want Jesus to wash his feet because that was something he was supposed to do since he was hosting the meal. He should have been there to wash feet of the other disciples or at least have water for them to do that. Maybe he was embarrassed by the whole ordeal. Maybe he say his master washing his feet as something that was not right. Masters were to be served and honored not the other way around.
Jesus shows Peter his heart and his willingness not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a payment for sin. We are given this beautiful gift of servanthood and then told to do the same thing to others. O that we could serve others the way Jesus served us. Take time today to contemplate this and then by grace may we serve one another. Remember how God has served you by giving us what we needed most when we deserved it the least.
John 13:5 Then He *poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. 6 So He *came to Simon Peter. He *said to Him, “Lord, do You wash my feet?” 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I do you do not realize now, but you will understand hereafter.” 8 Peter *said to Him, “Never shall You wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” 9 Simon Peter *said to Him, “Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head.” 10 Jesus *said to him, “He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, “Not all of you are clean.”
