St. Laurence Catholic Church in Elgin, IL, was looking for a pipe organ. Fr. Andrew heard of one available in a church that was closing in Oregon, IL, and asked Fabry Inc. to look at the possibility of moving it to St. Laurence. We were more than happy to do so.

Because the organ's old home needed to be emptied quickly, Fabry Inc. pulled the organ from the church and put it into storage before our annual Christmas tuning. As soon as the new year began, we pulled the chests from storage and began checking each pipe valve to make sure it worked. Those that needed replacement were replaced. The wood flute needed to have their chests modified so they could sit on the floor.

Dave Sr. prepared the space for the new organ at the church by cutting the carpet back and laying the floor frame marking where the organ would go. Once the chests were gone through at the shop, the organ was set up to make sure it would sit in the footprint that had been made at the church. The church also decided to purchase two new ranks, one for the Swell and one for the Great. We built new chests and fit used pipework into them. The organ could now be moved into its place at the church. The reservoirs were modified so the wind pressure could be adjusted and new wind lines were installed. The organ's blower was put in a sound proof box in the hallway so its noise would not disrupt services and allow the organ to be heard.

Once in it's new home, measurements could be made for the new casework that would surround the organ. David constructed the casework, staining it to match the console and samples from the church. The speaking pipes from the original facade made up the new facade and they fit harmoniously into the church's balcony. The console was rebuilt and utilizes the Peterson ICS-4000.

Trinity Episcopal Church in Aurora, IL, needed a new console. The old one wasn't dependable and quickly failing, mechanically. A church in Rockford was merging with another and no longer needed the organ's console. That's where we applied our expertise.

We removed the console from the old church and brought it to our shop. Once there, David reworked the interior, creating new drawk**b banks, a new rocker tab board and piston rails. New drawk**bs were installed with heads to match the organ it was going to. A new moveable platform was also built and was ultimately installed after the church remodeled the chancel area.

Once delivered to the church, Phil wired the console to the existing organ, using the existing Peterson Orgaplex in the console and merging it with the Orgaplex in the church. Trinity, in essence had a new console for their organ which was updated and mechanically reliable. It will give the church many more years of dependable service.

Immanuel Presbyterian Church has been a long-standing fixture in Milwaukee. Fabry Inc. has had the honor and privilege to service and improve the instrument. Some of the projects we have completed include an all-new three manual console, built from scratch by David, new all-electric tremolos, and new electric shade actions. Many ranks of pipes have been added to the organ including a commanding 8’ Tuba Major, an 8’ English Horn, a three-rank mixture in the Great, an 8’ Harmonic Flute and a 4’ Chimney Flute.

Most striking, however, is the façade we constructed in the style of the original instrument first installed in 1880. As a comprehensive redesign of the chancel area we removed the 1950’s era reredos, constructed all new, all wood, wainscotting to match existing wainscotting in the church, and new casework stained to match. The façade included two new ranks, a 16’ First Open Diapason and a 16’ Gamba. The area immediately behind the façade allowed for tuning access and areas to add ranks of pipes, which have been now occupied.

Chicago’s Church of the Holy Family was in the market for a new organ. The instrument they were using was rapidly failing and the addition of a mixture to the top of the instrument years ago didn’t do anything to improve its use. At the same time, Our Lady of the Angels in Joliet, IL, a nursing home for elderly nuns was closing and looking to re-home their M.P. Moller chapel organ. We put them in touch with each other and now Church of the Holy Family has a new-to-them pipe organ.

Within a few weeks’ time, we dismantled the original organ in the church and moved it to temporary storage in the basement. We then went to Joliet, dismantled the organ there and moved it to the church in Chicago where we set it up. As part of the project, we ran a new umbilical cord from the console to the organ and put the console on a moveable platform.

The organ now provides ample support for congregational singing and plays the liturgy with confidence.

On Monday, February 24, 2025, at 1 am, two semi-trucks that were parked directly behind our shop building caught on fire. The Antioch fire department arrived to find that both the north and south fire hydrants were frozen. By the time a water tanker truck arrived the fire had jumped from the semi-trucks to the roof of our building. Our building had two businesses working out of it: a cabinet manufacturer and Fabry Inc. Twelve different fire departments fought the fire for over 8 hours. While fighting the fire, the fire department called in an excavator to remove the metal roof so they could get at the fire from above. Ultimately the building was a total loss. Tuesday, while looking for what we could salvage, a hot spot in the back wall of the shop flared up and three Antioch trucks arrived to extinguish the flare up. We were fortunate that our client files were in somewhat waterproof file cabinets, and all our files were saved.

We stopped working for only one week as we tried to make sense of this disaster. We spent the time salvaging what we could, moving items to storage, setting up a temporary office in Dave Sr.’s dining room and garage, and figuring out how to move on.

We are now operating out of an office and garage in Antioch, IL, while our new shop is in Kenosha, WI. All new machines have been purchased and set up in two newly renovated buildings. We’re back to business as usual, completing many projects and preparing for Christmas tuning season.

St. John United Methodist in Davenport, IA, is a M.P. Moller installed new in 1960 by Dave Sr.'s dad & uncle. We hadn't been servicing the instrument for quite a while and the church approached us about offering a plan to update the console's combination action and replace failing shade actions. Ultimately, they elected us to complete quite a few projects.

We rebuilt the console using the Peterson ICS-4000 combination action and relay. The new console relay was interfaced with the existing relay in the chamber reducing the time required to get the organ playing again. Additionally, we provided an electrically adjustable bench.

We also replaced four failing pneumatic shade actions, replacing them with all-electric Peterson shade actions. We split the two-rank Sesquialtera into separate ranks allowing for more color without adding pipes.

Finally, we replaced the old 32', 12-note electronic extension speakers with new ones.

This project was completed at Second First Church in Rockford, IL. The primary reason for needing the rebuild was the failure of the combination action. It had become unreliable and you couldn't depend on it.

The console represents Opus One from our new shop in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The console was removed from the church and brought back to our new shop to be completely converted to solid state using the Peterson ICS-4000 System which included a new chamber relay. The console received new wood draw k**b banks, a new wood inter-manual coupler rail, new pistons, new toe studs, new expression and crescendo shoes, new draw k**bs, new rocker tablets, re-finished pedal keys, and a new LED music rack light as well as a new pedal LED light.

We would like to thank Pastor Martha Langford and Music Director/Organist Valerie Blair for all their cooperation and their confidence in Fabry Inc. for this major repair project.

Bexley United Methodist Church in Columbus, OH, has a M.P. Moller that was originally built in 1923 as Op. 5284. Moller then installed several tonal additions in 1960, and provided a new 3 manual console with a complete rebuild in 1981.

We entered into a contract with the church to rebuild the console using the Peterson ICS-4000 which features record and playback through its integrated MIDI system. The rebuild also included all new chamber relays and we rewired the entirety of the instrument using PVC color-coded cables. We also installed two electric shutter actions, and two electric tremolo units. Additionally, we provided an Erzahler Celeste in the Antiphonal division. We also furnished a new Antiphonal chamber pipe chest and built two new Swell 16/8/4 Gedeckt offset chests to replace four water-damaged chests. We then installed a larger Zephyr blower unit for the Antiphonal’s future addition of an 8’ Bombarde.

We would like to thank our good friend, Mr. Bert Adams, FAGO, for recommending Fabry Inc. and we appreciate all of the cooperation given to us from Pastor Colleen Ogle and the church staff. It was a sincere pleasure working for Bexley United Methodist Church.
