▫️Happy Pentecost Sunday▫️

Thank you, Father Selva, for sharing the precious gift of your priesthood with our parish family at St. Michael’s while Father John Peter was away. Having you return to celebrate Holy Mass with us was especially meaningful since you served as our beloved pastor for many years. Your presence and prayers were truly a blessing to our community. Safe travels, and may God continue to bless your ministry abundantly.

Why churches turn red for Pentecost on May 24
Red on Pentecost is basically the church’s way of setting the sanctuary on fire — symbolically.

Why red specifically?

The "tongues of fire" moment: The whole holiday comes from Acts 2:1-31, when the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus’ followers in Jerusalem. The Bible describes “what looked like tongues of fire” resting on each person. Red = fire = Holy Spirit showing up in a big way.

Blood and sacrifice: Red also represents the blood of martyrs and the courage it took to spread the Christian message after Pentecost. Since Pentecost is called the “birthday of the Church”, it marks when ordinary followers became bold public witnesses.

It’s liturgical color coding: Churches that follow a liturgical calendar use specific colors for seasons. Red shows up for Pentecost and for martyr feast days. You’ll see clergy in red vestments, altars draped in red fabrics, and sometimes congregants wearing red too.

So when you walk into church on May 24, 2026 and everything’s decked out in crimson, it’s not just decoration. It’s visual shorthand for “the Holy Spirit came like fire, and the Church was born”.

Pentecost always lands 50 days after Easter, which is why the date shifts each year. This time it’s Sunday, May 24.
