Part 7/7: The Freedom of True WORSHIP
You may have noticed that some people seem to be more vulnerable than others to certain temptations such as substance abuse. When we are empty spiritually, we are more prone to idolatry, just as when we are hungry for nutritious food we are more likely to crave junk food. While idols of the heart offer false promises of profit and pleasure, ensnaring us in bo***ge, only the one true God can satisfy our souls. May these verses inspire you to break down any idols of the heart that compete with your worship of Him.
Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. Isaiah 48:17
Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. Isaiah 55:2
Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Psalm 16:11
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24
And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:35
Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen. 1 John 5:21

Part 6/7: ADDICTION Proverbs 20:1 Philippians 3:18-19
Substance abuse has always plagued mankind, and the Bible contains many warnings about the dangers of alcohol. Native Americans consumed large amounts of wild to***co with high ni****ne content, as well as psychoactive coca leaves and cacti, which was a factor in their shamanic religious visions and unthinkable acts of human sacrifice. But to the east, the importation of o***m from the poppy plant brought tragic consequences two centuries ago. European merchants had established trade with India and China, buying large quantities of spices, cotton, tea, and porcelain. The East India Company was able to take advantage of divisions among warring leaders of India, but the English faced a striking trade imbalance with China, which would only accept silver as payment for their goods. O***m smuggled into China, with the help of local profiteers, soon claimed large numbers of addicts throughout the society, including the ruling class, the military, and poor people who were starving during times of famine when large portions of land were dedicated to growing the drug. O***m brought China to its knees, suffering humiliation in the O***m Wars. But the story of o***m became even more tragic worldwide, when scientists discovered how to isolate the morphine it contained to create a much more potent compound. Well-meaning doctors in the American Civil War and the World Wars set the stage for widespread addiction to morphine, and later, the even more deadly he**in. As if there were any doubt that modern people still worship the idol of addictive drugs, consider the widespread abuse of prescription drugs. Like the merchants of the past, modern drug dealers (illegal and legal) still make enormous profits at the expense of their victims. And before we pat ourselves on the back for not drinking, smoking, or using drugs, we should consider the similar way in which people can be addicted to unhealthy foods like refined sugar and flour. If a person refuses to give up a habit of overindulging in them, even when doctors warn that it will kill them, is that not an addiction?

Part 5/7: POWER Proverbs 29:25 Jeremiah 17:5-8
To the west, multiple waves of “Native Americans” settled the American continents. When Europeans arrived 500 years ago, they introduced diseases that killed most of them, but centuries before that tragic contact, bloody warfare between competing tribes slaughtered countless others, to the extent that a large portion of land in eastern North America became known as the “Vacant Quarter” and the “Dark and Bloody Ground.” The Aztecs in Mexico, like their Mayan predecessors, had a written hieroglyphic language and built large flat-top pyramids surrounded by large cities fed by the cultivation of maize. But they also practiced human sacrifice, sometimes murdering prisoners of war by the thousands and sometimes offering women and children to appease their false gods. James 4 explains the source of wars and fighting: lust. People lust for power, for wealth, for anything they want and do not have. This covetousness can lead to lying, stealing, and even killing to get what they idolize. Modern people are just as blinded by lust for power as they ever were. We’re surrounded by hatred and violence between individuals and nations every day in every nation. We should have a reverential fear of God, not live in fear of each other or worship earthly leaders.

Part 4/7: PLEASURE 2 Timothy 3:2, 4 Psalm 101:3
To the north, the Roman Empire was known for its “bread and circus.” The Coliseum especially symbolized the people’s obsession with entertainment. They watched bloody gladiatorial combat and cheered as Christians were devoured by wild beasts. Even after the Roman Catholic Church took control of the empire, the idea of Emperor worship continued in the form of the Pope. They encouraged pagan converts to continue idolatrous traditions and festivals that brought them pleasure, as long as they changed the names of old gods and goddesses to Christian ones like Jesus and Mary. Today, human nature is still prone to celebrity worship, obsession with sports, and unlike people of the past, addiction to electronics. It is common for people to waste most of the time they aren’t sleeping or working by staring at a television screen or smartphone as though they are hypnotized, and much of what they watch and hear would be inappropriate for a Christian regardless of the amount of time it consumes.

Part 3/7: GREED 1 Timothy 6:10 Colossians 3:5
(see also Ephesians 5:5) Proverbs 22:7
To the south, Egypt and the entire African continent have come to symbolize the evil of slavery. After the Israelites chose to remain in Egypt after Joseph saved them from famine, future generations were enslaved by the Egyptians until the Lord delivered them under Moses’ leadership. Centuries ago, many warring African tribes sold each other into slavery, selling captives to European slave traders. Both were worshiping the idol of greed. Although most nations banned institutionalized slavery in the 19th century, the idol of greed continues to enslave its worshipers in other forms. People everywhere are obsessed with either making money or buying material goods with it, whether or not they are able to afford it, ensnaring themselves in debt. Some waste what they have by gambling it away, in false hopes of winning more. But money and earthly treasures will never satisfy.

Part 2/7: LUST Romans 1:28
The Old Testament prophets repeatedly condemned the Israelites for adopting the practice of their heathen neighbors of sacrificing their children to the false god Moloch at a place called Tophet, where they would burn them in a furnace made in the bull-man’s image. Heathen worship was closely associated with fornication, and unwanted children were disposed of in the name of worshiping false gods, often associated across cultures with the sun and moon, and with fertility. We don’t have to look far to see evidence of idolatrous lust, with fornication, adultery, homosexuality, po*******hy, abortion, and parents neglecting the great responsibility and privilege of loving and raising their children.

The Bo***ge of IDOLATRY, Part 1/7
Romans 6:16-18 2 Peter 2:19
Ezekiel 14 accuses the Israelites of serving idols of the heart. We usually think of idols as physical objects, perhaps made of gold, stone, or wood, worshiped in heathen lands long ago. But we are surrounded by idols of the heart today as much as any age in history on any continent ever was. Ever since Satan tempted Eve and Adam in the Garden of Eden, mankind has been falling for the lie that he can take the place of God. Ironically, while attempting to do so, he becomes the servant of Satan. Let’s consider five common types of idolatry that we can still see all around us, if we know where to look.

"WISE COUNSEL" Proverbs Study, Part 10/10: CHOICES
Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Proverbs 4:14
Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;… To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;… That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. Proverbs 2:11-12, 16, 20
2 Corinthians 6:14

Earlier Proverbs warned young men of the dangers of “strange women.” It is easy to understand the description of harlots, but we should also recognize that the phrase “strange women” applied to those who were idolatrous. Later in his life, King Solomon allowed his many foreign wives to turn his heart to idolatry. “But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites; Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.” (1 Kings 11:1-2) Choose wisely in life, especially when selecting your one lifelong spouse. Don’t be “unequally yoked,” either with someone who doesn’t claim to be a Christian, or with an unbeliever who only professes to be a Christian but shows no evidence of a born-again heart, instead following their heart to serve idols.
Young men, search for the type of woman described in Proverbs chapter 31. She is diligent, faithful, and generous. Verses 25-26 tell us, “Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.” Young women, you too must beware of “evil men.” Avoid the pain that will result from yoking your life with one who is determined to follow his own will instead of God’s. First become the right kind of spouse yourself, then seek God’s will in finding a spouse who is also walking with Him. As Amos 3:3 asks, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” In addition to marriage, carefully weigh your choices in areas such as parenting, careers, and finances. It matters who you marry, how you teach your children, and what you prioritize with your time and money. Always choose wisely, with biblical wisdom as your guide.

"WISE COUNSEL" Proverbs Study, Part 9/10: PEACE
Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself; and discover not a secret to another: Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine infamy turn not away… If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee. Proverbs 25:9-10, 21-22
Matthew 18:15-17, 21-22
Like these Proverbs and Jesus’s teachings in Matthew chapter 18, His Sermon on the Mount also taught the importance of reconciling conflicts. In Matthew 5:9, Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” In verses 23-24, he continued, “Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.” In verses 44-48, He told us to love our enemies. In Matthew 7:3-5, He told us to examine ourselves before confronting others: “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.” And in verse 12, the “Golden Rule” reminds us, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.” We should commit to glorifying God by being peacemakers, lovingly confronting others when it is impossible to overlook an offense, avoiding sinful denial or attack responses, and being prepared to sincerely forgive those who have wronged us.

"Wise Counsel" Proverbs Study, Part 8/10: COMMUNITY
Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24
For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety. Proverbs 24:6
James 5:16 Galatians 6:1-2 Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
In Genesis, God said that it was not good for man to be alone. Titus chapter 2 speaks of the need for older men and women to mentor younger men and women. Just as the Bible warns against closely associating with bad influences, it encourages us to surround ourselves with people who are a good influence on our lives. Particular friends may come and go throughout life, but always be a friend and try to maintain several close friends who will provide you with much-needed encouragement and accountability.
Instead of contacts on social media, count how many good friends you speak with often.

"Wise Counsel" Proverbs Study, Part 7/10: TEMPLE
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Proverbs 20:1
My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Proverbs 4:20-23
1 Corinthians 3:16 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
1 Corinthians 10:13 2 Corinthians 6:16
Our bodies are the “temple of God.” We are both physical and spiritual beings. We should take care of our bodies with proper nutrition, exercise, and rest. That helps us have more energy to serve Him, more self-control, and a more positive outlook. We must avoid any substances like alcohol, drugs, or even certain foods in excess, that interfere with our service to Him. Like the warning in Proverbs chapters 5-7 to flee from harlots (referred to as “strange women”), Paul warned the Corinthians against giving in to lust. We easily fall prey to overpowering addictions. But God has promised to provide the grace we need to withstand any temptation. If we love Him more than any would-be idol, we will take advantage of His provision.
Get a “checkup” by reviewing your health habits and examining your heart in the light of God’s Word.

"The Church at Corinth," Part 5/5
2 Corinthians focuses on salvation and sanctification. When Paul wrote 2 Corinthians, his tone changed from condemning to comforting. (2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
Chapter 2 teaches that just as God had forgiven them, they were to forgive brethren who had repented since Paul wrote the earlier letter. As in his other epistles, Paul emphasized that salvation is entirely of God’s grace, and that our sanctification is a result of the new birth. (See for example Ephesians 1:4-7 and Ephesians 2:1, 8-10.) (2 Corinthians 5:17-18, 21) (2 Corinthians 6:14-18)
We continue living lives of repentance and faith, not in order to earn salvation, but as a result of our salvation by God’s grace. (2 Corinthians 7:8-11)
Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, inspired by the Holy Spirit (2 Timothy 3:16), because he loved the church, he loved the Lord, and he loved the truth. (2 Corinthians 11:2) Some of the subjects he wrote about likely seem challenging to you.
“As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.” (2 Peter 3:16)
If wrestling with them is to our destruction, yielding to them is to our benefit. Paul’s desire for the church at Corinth was the same as his desire for the church at Ephesus and for all of the Lord’s churches of every age: that we would grow in the truth. (Ephesians 4:14-15)
