✊🏾 Happy ! ✊🏾

Since its inception, “The People’s Brewer Hill Cemetery Corporation of Anne Arundel County,” (now Brewer Hill Cemetery Association) has been Black-founded, led, and operated.

As an entity of cemetery stewards not governed by a church, our organization is historic in its own right. We also have the honor of serving as the final resting place for many Black historical figures — across gender, social status, civilian, and military — whose actions span hundreds of years, and legacies continue to impact our people in the present day.

🗞️ 🗞️

Brewer Hill Cemetery is on BPW’s agenda tomorrow, and slated to be approved for a $250,000 grant from Maryland Historical Trust’s African-American Heritage program.

The funds will help us immensely with vegetation, ground-penetration radar assessment, preservation of grave markers, interactive signage, upgraded paved ways, and more.

The next phase of the BHCA’s vision is on the horizon, and we hope you’ll join us along the journey!

Across Maryland, cemeteries — both marked and unmarked — hold powerful stories about our communities, families, and shared history. The Maryland Inventory of Cemeteries and Burial Sites Workgroup Report explores why documenting these burial places matters and how a statewide cemetery inventory could help protect them from accidental damage, loss, and neglect.

🧑🏾‍🏫 Still thinking about last week’s town hall? So are we!

Calynn (BHCA), Jasmine (City of Annapolis), and Griffin (Atwell) shared a wealth of knowledge (and visuals!) with the audience about the topographical and geological obstacles of the property. For those interested in learning more about the irrigation plans that will abate some of our decades-long environmental challenges, our preservation page is now live!

What an inspiring and energizing night at the Brewer Hill Cemetery Association's town hall last week. Historic Annapolis is proud to partner with the Brewer Hill Cemetery Association, Inc.! It was amazing to see one of our passionate VSAs. Briayna Cuffie, standing tall at the podium!⭐ Brewer Hill Cemetery Association, Inc.

Brewer Hill is the resting place of generations of African-American Annapolitans, whose families have had to find ways to maintain the cemetery for many years. Maintenance has been a challenging task, as you can imagine.

The Brewer Hill Cemetery Association regularly holds fundraisers to help with maintenance costs for this important landmark, as the cemetery is dependent on donations and private fundraising projects.
