Like, y’know—what everybody wants.

Rev. Fred Muir, early morning on a recent Sunday, to a person visiting our post pantry, asking what we believe: We believe that people are good. We believe that the god you believe in is good. We believe that all people receive blessings.

“Statement from the Unitarian Universalist Association Regarding and Service Members
June 5, 2026
We send our unwavering support for (UU) in uniform and our UU military chaplains. We recently learned the Department of Defense (DOD) has removed 180 separate religious affiliations from the US military’s list of religious affiliation codes. This eliminates the code for Unitarian Universalists, as well as , and Pagan traditions, and many others. Along with dozens of other UUs will be categorized broadly under “Other” in military’s religious affiliation codes.

Please note this decision does not directly impact the status of our UU , who are authorized through a separate faith-based endorsement process with the. Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) What it does mean is that Unitarian Universalist service members will not be able to select their specific religious identity in their personnel records. This may make it more difficult for our uniformed UUs to access the spiritual care that they need.

At this time, we are diligently working with our UUA counsel and partners in a variety of faith traditions to craft a strategic response that faithfully represents our values and demonstrates clear support for our UU service members and their families, as well as all those who are impacted by this DOD policy.

We will share more information when it is available. But today, we declare that no government action can erase our faith nor lessen the powerful and necessary grounding it provides for those who serve.

The National Park Service is supposed to remove these labels from the Bunker Hill Monument. The problem seems to be that the labels imply that the monument differs in significance for different people, yet only a single understanding should be offered. The lengthy thread on the post by Sen. Markey, from which we got the photos, was not repugnant in language yet intriguing in how people differ in reading things.
Photo 1 seems to us to be unifying in that a contemporary of the revolutionary event comments that “colored Americans were…fighting with other patriots” against the British, which would seem to us , not dividing. The 2nd quotation is from a Black Vietnam veteran who says he’d rather see American monuments celebrate life rather than occasions of death. Is this supposed to be unpatriotic criticism or is it “bad” to mention a Black Veterans organization because such a thing is inherently divisive?
Photo 2 provokes even more confusion, because it is a comment on post Civil War resentment of the Irish moving into Boston. The person who cites this hostility says that it is up to “us” to prove that foreign born citizens are not lesser in & love of . Is that not a claim to unity & calling for the foreign born to prove their worth? The next comment is from a claim by a suffragist that the Bunker Hill Monument is “ours” in that it stands for determination in the cause of over a tough, long haul. Again, seems like unity, so is it “bad” per se for a woman to claim a share in American values?
Photo 3 does depict a confrontation of viewpoints. Daniel Webster praised the Bunker Hill monument as a permanent monument for the ages. The 2nd quotation is by an observer who sees the monument as a “mockery” of the slaves held by many of the “lovers of freedom.” If you find it “divisive,” we suggest that unity could be found not in silencing the 2nd voice but in aligning all behind a universal inclusion in freedom.
