Happy 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time! Reminder that tomorrow, on Labor Day, there will only be ONE Daily Mass at 9:00AM.

Today’s readings have a common theme of “fraternal correction”—the responsibility to help a brother or sister recognize a mistake or wrongdoing. Fraternal correction is born of charity and is one way we live out God’s command to love our neighbor as ourselves. To love another person is to desire their good, and sometimes that means having the courage to kindly point out what may be leading them away from that good.

Yet Jesus reminds us that correction must always be motivated by love, not anger, pride, or a desire to prove ourselves right. He tells us first to approach the person privately, with the hope of helping rather than condemning. This can be difficult because we may fear offending someone, or we may be tempted to speak about their faults to others instead. But genuine fraternal correction seeks to preserve the dignity of the other person and, above all, to restore communion.

The first reading calls Ezekiel a “watchman” responsible for warning others when they are going astray. We, too, have a responsibility to look out for one another. At the same time, we must be humble enough to receive correction ourselves. None of us sees our own faults perfectly, and we need the charity of others to help us grow in holiness. May we have the courage to correct with love, the humility to accept correction, and the wisdom to remember that, as St. Paul teaches, “love does no evil to the neighbor.”
