Last week, twelve area leaders of various Christian faiths gathered at St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church for an Ecumenical Worship Service to celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2026. This is the second year for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and for Elder Eric Baxter, Area Authority of the church, to participate in this interfaith celebration.

Brother Shawn Cooper, Annandale Stake Communications Director and Interfaith Coordinator for the church, shared that Father Rooney approached him about participating in Christian and Interfaith activities two years ago. Brother Cooper shared, "We gladly accepted this invitation. It has provided us a wonderful opportunity to share our love of Christ with our fellow Christian brothers and sisters in the area, along with sharing our love of our Heavenly Father with a broader faith base of brothers and sisters that we have working with, including wonderful leaders from the Jewish and Muslim community.”

In 2025, the General Primary Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints invited Stake and Ward Primary organizations to participate in service projects helping those in need. “Our Stake Primary Presidency felt inspired to replace our traditional day camp with a stake-wide service activity,” said President Jill Johson of the Annandale Stake Primary Presidency. “The feedback from stake families after that first event was overwhelmingly positive, and many expressed their appreciation, that our children could participate in meaningful service together.”

Working closely with the Just Serve Coordinator Kelly Serote, the Annandale Primary identified two community charities they could provide meaningful assistance to during the month of
March. The stake Primary selected LAWS, an organization supporting women and children who have faced domestic violence and sexual assault; and ACTS, a hunger prevention center that
serves families in the DMV area.

Over 200 volunteers in the stake signed up to support this effort. The Stake Primary collected much needed bedding and stuffed animals. They assembled food products and treats into kits to help families create traditions including birthdays and movie nights as a family during.

When asked what she hopes our Primary children will learn from this experience, President Johnson shared, “We hope that as the Primary children come to serve with their families, they will feel the joy that comes from thinking of others and giving selflessly – just as the Savior did. We want them to experience firsthand the
happiness and love that come from serving those in need.”

On February 28, community members gathered at Masroor Mosque for an interfaith Iftar hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community during the holy month of Ramadan. The event invited neighbors of different faiths and the community to learn from one another and discuss ways to strengthen service and cooperation in the community.

Representing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Rachelle Jensen from the Springfield Ward participated in a moderated panel discussion on the theme “Service to Humanity.” Faith and community leaders shared perspectives on how their beliefs inspire compassion and collaborative service. The evening concluded with the traditional breaking of the fast and a shared meal, fostering goodwill and strengthening relationships among local faith communities.
