Our new weekly historical series begins today.
📜 STORIES BENEATH THE STONES
Volume I • Issue No. 1

This week we honor Acting Assistant Paymaster John Montague Gunn, a Union naval officer aboard the USS Mound City, who died during one of the most devastating naval disasters of the Civil War.

Buried here at Casper Church Cemetery, his gravestone tells the tragic story of the explosion aboard the Mound City during the Battle of St. Charles, Arkansas on June 17, 1862 — an event later called “the deadliest shot of the Civil War.”

Through military records, newspaper archives, family histories, and the stories carved into stone, we hope to preserve and share the remarkable lives connected to Casper Church Cemetery.

We invite you to follow along each week as we uncover the stories beneath the stones.

As Memorial Day Weekend comes to a close, we want to extend our deepest and most heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped support Casper Church & Cemetery Association this weekend. ❤️🇺🇸

Thank you to those who stopped by to donate, visited with volunteers, shared our posts, honked and waved as they passed by, mailed donations, or simply helped spread the word. Every act of kindness mattered.

This weekend was not just about raising funds. It was about community, remembrance, history, faith, and preserving a place that means so much to so many families.

Because of your generosity, we are able to continue caring for the church and cemetery grounds and work toward addressing several important maintenance and repair needs this year including termite treatment, roof repairs, window repairs, siding repairs, and ongoing upkeep expenses.

We also want to give a special thank you to all of the volunteers who donated their time throughout the weekend. None of this would be possible without people willing to step up and help.

Even though Memorial Day Weekend has ended, donations may still be mailed throughout the year to:

Casper Church & Cemetery Association
225 Casper Church Rd
Anna, IL 62906

There is also a donation box located at the cemetery that is checked regularly for anyone wishing to donate in person after hours.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping us preserve Casper Church & Cemetery for future generations. May God bless each of you. ❤️

🇺🇸 Good Morning & Happy Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Their courage, service, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

As families gather and flags wave across our communities today, may we all take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day and remember those who gave everything for this country.

Volunteers will be at Casper Church & Cemetery Association today from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM as we continue our Memorial Day Weekend Fundraiser.

Your donations help support the perpetual care and preservation of our historic church and cemetery grounds. This year, we are also facing several additional maintenance and repair needs including termite treatment, roof repairs, window repairs, siding repairs, and seasonal mowing expenses.

John 15:13

As another day comes to a close, our hearts are truly full. ❤️

This Memorial Day Weekend has reminded us just how much community, history, faith, and kindness still matter. We are so grateful to every person who stopped by Casper Church & Cemetery Association, shared a story, offered encouragement, made a donation, or simply took a moment to visit and remember loved ones.

And tonight, this verse feels especially fitting:

“Let all that you do be done in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:14

Thank you for loving this little church, this cemetery, and this community enough to help preserve it.

We will be back tomorrow, Memorial Day, Monday May 25th, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

May God bless each of you for your kindness and support. 🇺🇸

As the sun sets on another day of our Memorial Day Weekend Fundraiser, we simply want to say thank you. ❤️ Thank you to everyone who stopped by today to visit, donate, share a memory, honk as you drove by, or simply show support for Casper Church & Cemetery Association.

Places like this are not preserved by one person alone. They survive because of community, generosity, and people who still care about honoring history, family, and those who came before us.

Every donation given this weekend helps us continue maintaining the church and cemetery grounds, along with covering several unexpected repair and maintenance needs this year including termite treatment, roof repairs, window repairs, siding repairs, and ongoing mowing expenses.

We are incredibly grateful for every single person who has helped in any way.

We will be back at the cemetery tomorrow, Sunday, May 24, from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM collecting donations throughout the day.

Thank you for helping us preserve Casper Church & Cemetery for future generations. 🇺🇸

🌿 With Deepest Gratitude 🌿

This Memorial Day weekend, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the 10 sets of incredible volunteers who are dedicating their time in 4-hour shifts to help us raise funds for the ongoing care of Casper Church Cemetery. Your commitment keeps our grounds sacred, peaceful, and beautifully maintained — and we are so deeply grateful for all that you do. 💚

Maintaining this approximately 10-acre cemetery — the final resting place for generations of families and Union County founders — is not only an honor but a growing financial challenge. Last year, our total expenses reached $12,527.00, covering grounds maintenance, insurance, and general upkeep. Sadly, only half of that was covered by annual contributions.

With rising costs and the impact of unpredictable Memorial Day weekend weather (two years in a row), donations have dropped significantly. This is why your support matters now more than ever.

📬 How to Donate:
If you would like to help preserve the legacy and serenity of Casper Church Cemetery, donations can be made by mail or in person:
📍 Casper Church Cemetery Association
225 Casper Church Rd
Anna, IL 62906

🕊️ There is also a secure donation box located at the cemetery entrance, checked daily.

Whether you're a local neighbor, a descendant, or someone who simply values the history and peace this sacred ground represents — your donation truly makes a difference.

Thank you for helping us keep this beloved place beautiful and dignified for generations to come. 🌺
