St Thomas Lutheran Church

St Thomas Lutheran Church News and notes from the ministry of St. Thomas Lutheran Church just outside of Ann Arbor, in Freedom Township, Michigan. St.

Thomas Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor, Michigan, is a confessional congregation of the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. We are an intimate community of 50 people on Sunday morning. Our mission project is our child care center which has about 30 children learning about the love of God through story and song. We are learning the Scriptures together, growing in the grace of discipleship, and reaching out to our community to make new friends and help those in need.

January 25 – Third Sunday after Epiphany

Matthew 4:20 – “Immediately they left their nets and followed him.”

Discipleship cost Peter and Andrew everything they had. They left their trade, their hometown, their families, and they followed Jesus. God has called us to the same discipleship, the same devotion, though the exact details of how that is lived out will vary. The important thing is this: we know that all we have is the Lord’s, to be used for His purpose. We are His disciples and are ready to follow where He leads.

January 18 – Second Sunday after Epiphany

John 1:29 – “The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!’”

The Israelites of old offered a lamb to God at Passover so that death might pass over them and do no harm. Over those long centuries of sacrifice, did they understand that this was actually God’s gift? That God would be the true Giver of the true Lamb? Truly, we can never out-give God, for all that we have is His.

January 11 – The Baptism of Our Lord

Matthew 3:15 – “But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.’”

The reason God sent His Son into the world is to fulfill all righteousness for us, to do what we could not do. Here, Jesus plunges Himself into our sins and soaks them up in His Baptism, so that in our Baptism we might be cleansed and renewed. The whole of Jesus’ life, everything He did and said, was one great offering to the Father in our stead to fulfill all righteousness for us.

Consider joining LCMS Life for the National March for Life in Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 2026!

The 2026 National March for Life is in Washington, D.C. on Friday, January 23, 2026. Plan now to join other Lutherans to march and stand boldly together in the public square and confess our beliefs about the sanctity of life. More information is to come.

January 6 – The Epiphany of Our Lord

Matthew 2:11 – “And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.”

For the wise men and for us, worshiping and offering gifts go together. How could this not be, since our God is the great Giver of gifts? We receive His gifts in worship and then, being conformed to His image, we imitate His generosity.

We are excited to share this monthly resource
with you and pray that it serves your family well.

LCMS Family Ministry is here to support and encourage you
as you pass down the faith to the next generation. Whatever the
age or stage of your family may be, spending time together in
the Word and in prayer will keep your family firmly rooted and
grounded in the One who never changes (HEB. 13:8).
Even children at a very young age can begin to learn the
prayers of the church, the Ten Commandments, the Creeds and
the parts of the Small Catechism, and memorize passages of
Scripture.

Though not all-inclusive, we hope that this schedule will serve
as a launching point for further family study and conversation.
What a gift and privilege it is to nurture children in the fear
of the Lord! The family that prays together, confesses Christ
together and studies the unchanging Word together is a strong
and unshakeable force (PSALM 1:3).
