We're so used to packing everything we need and we're constantly encouraged to do everything for ourselves. But when Jesus sends his disciples out, he tells them not even to take the essentials - specifically so they can learn to depend on others.

Matthew was a tax collector, which means he worked for Rome - which means Jesus probably wasn't supposed to be eating with him. Jesus certainly wasn't supposed to be calling him.

But when you're called into something, you're called away from something else.

*Found*

David just graduated from UM in Math and Computer Science. He was born and raised in New York City, and he sang in the Grammy-nominated Trinity Church-Wall Street youth choir from the age of 6 onwards.

David transferred to U of M his junior year from the University of Maryland, so finding a community at his new university was especially important, and a little tricky. “At Maryland, I’d found a good faith community,” he says, “but at Michigan I was bouncing around a lot of churches. I couldn’t find a community that I could invest in and that would invest in me. Sometimes the churches felt way too big, and some other campus ministries, our values didn’t align. I think that in LCM, I’ve found a place that has the theology, attitude, and values I resonate with.”

It was David’s girlfriend, Jaiden, who first found Lord of Light and LCM over the summer. “We’d been looking for something smaller than where we’d been before,” he says, “and I came, and I liked it too. I think it’s really nice to know that on a weekly basis, there’s a group of people that I can catch up with and spend time with, and that I know where their values lie.”

David grew up in the Reformed church but had never been baptized, so he approached Pastor Elizabeth about whether he might be baptized at Lord of Light. On April 12, the Sunday after Easter, David was formally welcomed into God’s family here. His brother, Peter, flew out from New York and was able to be with David as his sponsor. When asked what he’s most thankful for about Lord of Light and LCM, David says, “It’s the warmth of the people here. I’m just very grateful that after trying so many other ministries, I found this place.”

The Spirit that moves through us, that named and claimed us in our baptism, calls us to dive in and experience God’s embrace – never alone, always in the presence of the One who made us, who loves us, and who has called us good.

It's really hard to understand each other, and sometimes downright impossible - especially without a shared language. That's why Pentecost was so miraculous 🔥

*Too Good to Be True*
Hannah is a freshman majoring in chemistry who also loves art. “I really like to do both STEM and art,” she says, “because I like to have a balance between the different fields.”

Growing up, Hannah attended a Seventh-Day Adventist church. “There were a lot of things I liked in the church,” she says. “I was part of a church group called Pathfinders, which is kind of like scouts – you earn patches and stuff. That was big for me in middle school.” When Covid hit, Hannah’s family stopped going in person but attended online. “Even after Covid,” she says, “we kept watching online but I didn’t feel like I had a church.”

When she arrived at the University of Michigan, Hannah didn’t think she was going to find a religious community. Walking around campus, she saw some posters for Lord of Light Lutheran Church and Campus Ministry up around the Diag. “I was drawn to inclusive Christian community,” she says. “I was even more drawn to the 5pm service with dinner afterwards, which sounded too good to be true – but it turned out to be true! The timing of the service has been great for my incredibly messed-up sleep schedule, and I have a lot of friends who I come to Central Campus from North to see every week. I felt like I wasn’t going to find a church that would accept me, or that I could click with. But then I found this place.”

LoL and LCM have provided Hannah with a faith community whose theology is rooted in grace. “I am a lot less stressed about my faith,” she says. “There’s this kind of Christianity that’s preached on the Diag, and these messages that I hear through popular Christianity, and I knew that my beliefs didn’t line up with those messages. When I didn’t have a church that I was going to, I wasn’t getting any other perspectives. In Pastor Elizabeth’s sermons, there are ways she’ll talk about things in another context that are different from what I’ve heard before.

“Now,” Hannah says, “I’m more open. Having a church gives me a place to ask questions and motivates me to speak up and try to do what’s right. I was not planning on joining a church when I came to college, but I’m so glad that I’ve found this place.”

Jesus knows he is about to leave his friends and that they are about to go through some incredibly difficult times. He knows he is about to pass the baton. He is asking, out of love, that God would equip them for this time, and that God would strengthen them in love for one another and for the world.

How will we leave our community, our church, our world, better than we inherited it? Jesus has called us into the life of discipleship that asks what is ours to do in the time we have here on this earth, what our next most faithful step is. We are not the ones who will complete the work, but knowing we are beloved, we know our vocation lies in shaking off our surprise and taking our next most faithful steps in discipleship and love.
