You don't know how happy we were to help this couple with their unusual but absolutely wonderful request!
Thank you very much to the South Scott Cemetary for making my wedding day feel as though my family was still here with me.
Growing up I was raised by my wonderful mother, who thankfully is still with me, but also by a wonderful uncle, Gary Butz, and my grandparents Kenny and Mary Butz. I love both my grandparents, but I will always be a grandpa's girl. My uncle and grandmother had previously passed, so when my grandpa passed in April of this year, it was with with very mixed emotions. Grandpa was longing to go home to be with so many family members that had passed before him. But it ment that I lost the last member of my extended family.
Being an ordained Pentecostal Minister, I has seen grandpa perform many wedding ceremonies over the years. And now he was gone, unable to perform or even witness mine.
I had read about cemetary weddings online, and how the ceremony performed graveside was a way to honor and include members of family that could not be present. The idea stuck with me. I discussed it with my Fiance, Steven. Knowing my relationship with my grandpa, witnessing it for the past 21 years, he was more than open to the idea, especially if it was what I would like for our big day. With each person I spoke to about it, I waited for the backlash for someone to say ot was morbid or creepy. Surprisingly, everyone I spoke to understood, I supposed we've all lost someone we wish could be there for the big milestones in our lives.
After I had discussed our request with my parents and the minister performing the ceremony, the hardest request cme when I messaged the South Scott Cemetary. I thought for sure this request would be politely denied. Again, I think I underestimated the commonality that all of us feel when we lose those we love. The cemetary gave their approval for our ceremony on the grounds.
I won't go into too much detail of the ceremony that day other than to say it was an incredibly overcast cloudy day. However after the ceremony, the cloud cover did break just enough to allow a few rays of the hiding sun to shine directly down in the background. Corny, but those sunbeam were ment for Steve and I on our special day from those with is in spirit.
Again, thank you to the South Scott Cemetary for allowing our family to be all together on our Wedding Day.
