Today He is suspended on a tree, Who suspended the earth over the waters. A crown of thorns was placed on the head of the King of angels. He who wore a false purple robe covered the heavens with clouds. He was smitten who in the Jordan delivered Adam. The groom of the church was fastened with nails and the Son of the Virgin was pierced with a spear. Thy sufferings we adore O Christ. Make us to behold Thy glorious Resurrection.

The second event we commemorate with regard to the Elevation (Exaltation) of the Cross, happened several years after it was discovered. The Persian king, Chozroes, captured Jerusalem and enslaved its people, carrying the Lord’s Cross away to Persia. It remained there for 14 years. In 628, the Greek Emperor Heraclius defeated Chozroes in battle and brought the Cross back to Jerusalem. Heraclius, in his imperial finery, carried the Cross on his back. As he was entering the city, he came to a point where he couldn’t move, frozen in his steps. Patriarch Zacharius, in a vision, saw an angel telling the Emperor to remove his imperial robes and walk along the way that Christ had walked, barefoot and humiliated. The Patriarch related this vision and the Emperor stripped himself of his raiment and, in poor clothing and barefoot, took up the cross, carrying it to Golgotha, where he placed it in the Church of the Resurrection, to the joy of the whole Christian world.

Today in the Orthodox Church we celebrate the Elevation (Exaltation) of the Cross. There are two events related to the Cross which are commemorated today. Empress Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine, was staying in the Holy Land. She discovered that the Cross was buried under a pagan temple on Golgotha, the place of Christ’s crucifixion. She ordered that the temple be pulled down and the hill excavated. Three crosses were uncovered in the process. At a loss to discover which was the Cross of Christ, the Empress enlisted the aid of Patriarch Macarius, who, noticing a funeral procession passing by, ordered that the crosses be placed one after the other on the deceased. After the first and second crosses were placed, nothing happened. When the third Cross was placed on the lifeless co**se, the man was restored to life. The Patriarch raised the Cross high for all to see and the people, with tears, sang “Lord, have mercy!” Part two in the next post.
